In the early morning hours of Thursday October 8th the East Rockaway Fire Department was alerted by Nassau County Fire Communications - Firecom for a General Al...arm - reports of smoke in a house on Bowler Road. As department Chiefs Roeill, Bilardello, and Monaco arrived on scene they had smoke showing from a private residence and Chief Roeill transmitted a Signal 10- Working House Fire. Engine 404 was the first arriving apparatus and established a water source and stretched the first line with assistance from the crews from Engines 406 and 405. Members from Ladder 403 were met with extreme colliers mansion conditions as they searched the structure for the best access to the basement were the fire was originally located. Due to the colliers mansion conditions and multiple collapses of the first floor it took crews considerable effort and close to three hours to extinguish the stubborn basement fire that had extended to the first and second floors and check for extension throughout the structure. The department would like to thank all the mutual aid companies that assisted in operations: Lynbrook FD, Rockville Centre Fire Department, Malverne Fire Department, Lakeview Fire Department, Oceanside NY Fire Department, Hewlett Fire Department and Valley Stream Volunteer Fire Department. The scene was cleared at approximately 8:45am with only 1 minor injury that was treated and released at the scene. All operations were under Chief of Department Ronald Roeill.

We regret to pass on that a San Francisco Firefighter died in the Line of Duty this morning after falling three stories during a drill at a department training facility. Firefighter Paramedic Jason Cortez, 42, fell at least 30 feet, initially reported as from a ladder during a training drill. FF/PM Cortez, the son of a retired San Francisco firefighter, was married and had two children, and was a 13-year veteran of the department. One report is that FF/PM Cortez had one foot ...on the balcony on the side of a brick training tower and one foot on a ladder. He was apparently in the process of hooking up a line when he was overwhelmed by the unexpected force from a stream of water. Members immediately tried to revive him at the scene and was rushed to San Francisco General and was pronounced dead. Much more to follow. Our condolences to all those affected. Rest In Peace. Take Care. Be Careful. Pass It On. BillyG The Secret List 10/7/2020-2043 hours www.FireFighterCloseCalls.com
