National Urban Fellows honors Fred Korematsu for his tireless fight to ensure equal rights and restitution for Japanese Americans. Korematsu spent his life as an activist fighting for Civil Rights. In the 1940s, he defied President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066, which authorized the removal of individuals of Japanese ancestry living on the West Coast from their homes and their mandatory imprisonment in internment camps. He took his fight all the way up to the US Supreme Co...urt in Korematsu v. United States, which upheld the order, only to be overturned 72 years later. Korematsu later successfully lobbied for the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 which provided financial redress to the surviving detainees. For his contributions to advancing liberty, he posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. National Urban Fellows carries on this inspirational legacy of courage and tenacity through our cultivation of equity-centered leaders. #aapi #asianamericanpacificislander #aapiheritagemonth #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #shapetheworld #womenempowerment #nationalurbanfellow
