A classic image of Sackets Harbor looks out at Navy Point from the inner harbor at just about where the 1817 Union Hotel building stands. Possibly, French natur...alist and artist Jacque Milbert stayed at the new hotel and sketched the scene before him. He toured New York State between 1815 and 1823, most probably Jefferson County toward the end of his travels here. Examining the scene, the viewer can see Navy Point with four War of 1812 ships ‘in ordinary’ (mothballed) and a ship on the left which might be the USS Jefferson. In 1815 after the war, navy commander Chauncey recommended selling or dismantling war ships which happened between 1816 and 1825. The huge ship house, built between 1816 and 1820, covers the unfinished War of 1812 ship-of-the-line USS New Orleans. In the foreground at the wharves are wagons pulled by oxen at several warehouses and a cluster of people stand near a smoky fire. Large ship’s anchors nearby could remain from the war’s shipbuilding efforts, or more likely on-hand for the constant shipbuilding that made the harbor famous prior to the war and long afterward. Slightly past the harbor on the right, toward the army post Madison Barracks, the Stone Mill on the shore is a landmark still standing. Further on the right, the Madison Barracks Stone Row or rows built between 1816 and 1819 can be seen. A recent article in the Jefferson County New York Genealogical Society’s Informer details this artist’s travels in the county.

Fried chicken and waffles with a whiskey sour on the side, welcome to The Whiskey Coop in Sackets Harbor. This is the kind of place Foodies like us seek out. ...With live bluegrass music playing, we decided to start our meal with one of their signature whiskeys. The whiskey sour is served in a martini glass with a cherry. The sour came in a bell jar glass ready to drown the cherry in pure delight. Nothing pleases a Foodie more than finding something different than anything offered locally. Today I went with the chicken and waffles. The waffle was covered in an amazing bourbon maple syrup with Cajun butter on the side. I had mine with the fried chicken drum sticks rather than the fried chicken patty. The Belgian waffles were amazing and the drum stick was the largest I have ever seen. The Cajun butter was kind of a sneaker, mild at first with a kick to follow. They also offer a vegan or vegetarian version (can someone share with me the difference?). This chicken was really finger-licking good. The fried chicken dinner consisted of two huge drumsticks (or a boneless chicken breast), buttermilk battered and fried, served Kentucky crisp or Nashville hot (it was pretty mild) with a side of Bayou (Cajun) corn. The corn was mixed with a combination of onions and peppers slowly sautéed in butter while still al dente (with a hint of crisp). The dill and potato salad was a huge hit as was the homemade buttermilk biscuits with Cajun butter. The fried pickle spear was a large dill pickle sliced then dipped in a Panko- batter then deep-fried and served with dipping sauce. We went with the chipotle ranch, although they were better plain. Most restaurants serve fried pickle slices, not the entire spear. It was worth the visit. The smoked pork belly was slow roasted and served crisp with bourbon, brown sugar, and maple glaze with scallions. It did not have nearly the fat I have experienced in other restaurants. As always I enjoy talking with customers and asking about their meal. The couple next to us was hooked on the Pickle Rick! Buttermilk battered fried chicken breast, house Szechuan Sauce (think McDonald limited edition), dill pickles, and cilantro aioli on a toasted Kaiser roll topped with fried pickle spears. Also pictured is their Hot Mess. They use their world-famous blue cheese dressing collides with Sweet Baby Ray’s hot sauce on their house-battered, fried chicken breast with marbles Monterey jack cheese, dill pickles, and romaine lettuce. This is absolutely on my radar. Interestingly enough they serve a popcorn ice cream and bourbon butterscotch. Its popcorn chicken with ice cream on top. While we did not try it today I have pulled a picture from there FB page. It is on my radar for our next visit. With limited inside seating, they are erecting a large outside tent with elevated propane heaters to provide additional seating throughout the year. Given their physical location this should work. Our server today was Greg. We enjoyed his assistance as we worked through this chicken heavy menu. His cheerful masked attitude told us he loved the food he was serving. The kitchen staff seemed to like what they were doing as well. With owner Cheryl Chaif leading the charge, they have created a business that epitomizes the spirit of entrepreneurship. With the Regal Theater at the Salmon River closed they decided to shut the doors of Skewed Brewing and venture out. In December they will be opening a new venture in downtown Lowville. While the name has not been determined in essence it will be craft beers and gourmet hot dogs (at the former Bark Eater). They have live Blue Grass music by Coyote Crow on Saturdays from 3-5 and Thursdays 6-8. This New York City-based duo have recently relocated to the area and offer some music not normally found in Northern New York. Wednesday night is off all signature whiskeys. They are open Wednesday Friday 4-11, Noon till 11 on Saturdays and Noon till 8 on Sundays, They are located at 214 (the Boat House is 214) West Main Street in Sacketts Harbor (on Lake Ontario). Call them at 315-646-6006. Renzi Foods is their primary supplier. The pictured menu reflects coming soon, while it is currently offered. Don’t let the meatless chicken patty on the menu confuse you. They also offer the real thing. It is great that they offer vegan and vegetarian choices. The Nashville Hot Chicken spice blend is a dish they fell in love with a few years ago in Nashville. Prepare to sweat on this one (although I didn’t consider it hot).
