#LetsBeBrief and learn about the G7’s recent agreement to have a global minimum corporate tax rate of at least 15% and upcoming negotiations! Top economic officials from the Group of Seven (G7) wealthy countries made what has been described as a historic and unprecedented agreement to create a #global minimum corporate #tax rate of at least 15 percent. The agreement has two pillars. The first pillar allows countries to tax about 100 multinational companies (MNCs) base...d on the revenue they generate in which they operate (not just where they are headquartered). It applies to #MNCs that exceed a 10 percent profit margin. The second pillar affects about 8,000 MNCs including #Amazon, #Google, and #oil companies by setting a minimum global tax rate. The purpose of the global minimum corporate tax rate is to eliminate #MNC’s advantages in shifting profits to low-tax country. The OECD estimated that under the reforms, $81 billion USD in additional tax revenues would be raised. While the #G7 Agreement is a big step, the #OECD and #G20 countries will try to reach a broad consensus on a global minimum tax rate next month. #Ireland, a low-tax country, has spoken out against the tax rate as it could lose up to a fifth of its corporate revenue. Other economic leading countries like #China, #India, #Brazil, and #Russia will be involved in talks next month. Spokespeople from both Google and #Facebook have acknowledged the importance of international tax reform and they may have to pay more taxes as a result. While much is still to be negotiated over the next coming months, the Agreement demonstrates the power and legitimacy of #international cooperation in addressing #corporations that have spanned across transnational boundaries in the #digital age. #OnThisDay in history, Israel and Syria signed a UN-brokered ceasefire effectively ending the 1967 Six Day War which resulted in Israel capturing the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, and the Sinai Peninsula as well as major losses for the Arab armies. The aftermath of this war worsened Israeli-Palestinian relations, which today are marked by recent violence in Gaza. #FBF Photo Credit: Reuters (1967), AFP (2021) #Network2020 #History #Israel #Syria #War #UnitedNations #Ceasefire #ForeignPolicy #ForeignAffairs
