New York Folklore's new exhibit (April-October 2021) focuses on the work of Ethimios (Altin) Stoja of Cohoes, an iconographer whose work has been documented as part of the 2020 NYSCA Upstate Regional Initiative, a partnership program of New York Folklore and the NYSCA Folk Arts Program. The exhibit of iconography and other works will be on view through to Mid-October in our gallery at 129 Jay Street, Schenectady. Altin will also be a featured guest on a May 5th segment of the Schenectady Today show, hosted by Ann Parillo so we encourage you to view this show if you are interested in learning more about Altin and his work. Thank you to our Upstate Regional fieldworkers - Ladan Nikravan and Anne Rappaport for their documentation and advocacy! #folkarts #folkartsallaroundus #nyfolklore #creativeschenectady #nysarts

We at New York Folklore know that there are great financial needs right now, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also know that we are only one of a great many organizations that are participating in Giving Tuesday. For more than 75 years, New York Folklore has worked to bring New York's traditional arts and culture to the forefront through advocacy, technical assistance and professional development, and through supporting the work of folk artists, folk cultural specialists, and grassroots community organizations to better sustain themselves and their communities. Please consider New York Folklore this Giving Tuesday. Your donation - no matter how small - makes a difference to our efforts in New York State. https://nyfolklore.org/donate/

Today is "Small Business Saturday." When you shop at the New York Folklore gallery at 129 Jay Street, Schenectady, you not only support the non-profit service organization, but you also directly support a folk and traditional artist in New York State as everyone in the gallery shop is on consignment. Come out also and see the exhibition of Chinese brush painting by Capital Region artist, Zhong-hua Lu. https://nyfolklore.org/events-and-exhibitions/

Starting Today (!), October 5th, the Center for Traditional Music and Dance will be launching an online concert series to air Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week at 5:00 p.m. on the CTMD You Tube and Facebook pages. Whether a workshop, lecture demonstration, or streamed live performance, a stellar cast of musicians and dancers presents their personal stories, remarkable traditions, and pandemic experiences. Arun Venugopal of WNYC will serve as the series host and intro...duce each episode. The link to access the series is her: https://www.youtube.com/user/CTMDProgramsConcerts or via facebook at https://www.facebook.com/CTMDnyc The artists highlighted and celebrated range from the Afro-Colombian musical family of Johanna Castaneda and Ronald Polo in Queens to the embodied storytelling of Japanese dancer Sachiyo Ito in Manhattan, from the intergenerational Sri Lankan Dance Academy of New York representing Staten Island to Afro-Puerto Rican bomberos Los Pleneros de la 21 in the Bronx, among many others. The resulting collection of their combined voices will remain available online on CTMD’s website (www.ctmd.org) to serve as a powerful document and platform for continuing advocacy for traditional arts in the city of immigrants. Now more than ever do we need to support folk and traditional artists who are often particularly vulnerable members of new immigrant and underserved communities.

More on Taylor Swift's new album, "Folklore."

New York Folklore 10.07.2020

AFS President Norma Elia Cantú states "What a gift Taylor Swift has given us with her new release, Folklore! We in the field of folklore know the power that li...es in celebrating our traditions, our culture, and the daily ways we express who we are, the folk! Folklore is the knowledge of the folk. As a folklorist and as the current President of our national organization, the American Folklore Society, my goal is to share with those outside of our field, how critical folklore is to our everyday life. I am specifically aware of the impact of our cultural traditions during this time of a global pandemic and of the BLM movement. Our world will never be the same and folklore can be the stabilizing force, the vehicle through which we move through the shift as we enter the future." #folklore #afs365 See more
