New Amsterdam Circle Last call for Gay Gotham tour with curator Stephen Vider

Here's a dispatch from a recent photo shoot in #DressingRoomNY, where our Collections team cloaked one mannequin in Valentina’s 1947 Cleopatra (worn by Kathar...ine Cornell in a 1947 hit Broadway production) and another in NY couturier Charles James’s 1951 rose satin ball gown. Both are very theatrical in their own way, says fashion curator Phyllis Magidson of the pair of midcentury dresses. But Valentina’s form-defining costume presents quite a contrast to the freestanding architectural marvel that follows. And at 20 pounds of fabric, the James dress took 4 staff members to maneuver onto the form.
