#ideservebirthsupport Anyone who knows me knows how dearly I love birth. Area hospitals have now effectively banned doulas from attending births, by restricting... laboring mothers to one support person. And as much as I know how doulas are evidence-based support for mothers and their families, I am profoundly humble about the meaning of my role, as a mere witness to a family’s intimacy and love. But now, hospitals are banning partners from the birth of their child. That is a human rights violation. The international community has identified support during childbirth as a woman’s right, as much so as informed consent. Women should not have to birth alone, just as victims of COVID-19 should not have to die alone. There are some aspects of the human experience which are universal, and sacred. Birth and death are two of them. Fathers should not be forcibly separated from the mothers of their children. Mothers should not be forcibly separated from their babies (as is the plan if the mother tests positive for COVID-19). The parents should have the freedom to choose what they believe to be best for their family. I am joining in this campaign to raise awareness of this issue. I hope those in positions of power over birth circumstances listen to the mothers. This present course of action is not wise, nor compassionate. NOTE: post edited for clarification. Mothers in our area may choose one support person, for now. But it must be the same person for the duration of her stay. And if a mother were to test positive for COVID-19, her baby would be isolated from her for 14 days. There is no knowing how long this will continue; until today, local hospitals were still allowing professional doulas, even with one support person policies in place. I just really hope hospitals here hold the line for support, unlike the hospitals in NY. Outcomes will be worse if mothers are forced to birth alone. I am so thankful for the dedicated birthworkers here who are advocating for mothers and their families in the midst of such difficult circumstances.

We are looking for a Massage therapist, Reflexologist, Acupuncturist or Cognitive therapist who is looking to build their business and may be interested in sharing our space.
