TETELESTAI. One of the last things Jesus said on the cross is one of the most powerful concepts that I don’t think many of us grasp the magnitude of. It is finished is what this Greek world literally translates to English. Without giving it much thought, I always assumed He was acknowledging that His time on Earth was done. It was finished, right? ... But it’s so much more then that. Back then, the word tetelestai was used to stamp on the top of documents and receipts, saying that a debt has been paid in full. What happens when you pay a debt in full? You never have to pay for it again... ever. The debt is gone forever, once and for all! So the Greeks reading John’s words, and those that were present to hear it knew exactly what this meant. Those that follow Jesus, believe in Him and claim Him as Lord are forgiven; their sins are gone forever, once and for all! Our sins are paid for, because of what Jesus did for us on that cross on the very first Good Friday. Isn’t that incredible? All the work that our Father God did to set up Jesus’ time on Earth; the parallels of scripture, the reflections of Jesus in the great passages of the Old Testament, the bloodline of Jesus, the power of the prophecies and law fulfilled; it was all finished. Isn’t that phenomenal? I challenge you to take a moment to seriously reflect on what you haven’t given up to Christ. The sins, the burdens, the struggles- why do you keep picking them back up? Would you call your credit card company and ask them if you can keep paying them after you pay it off? Would you keep paying your student loans because you felt some awkward obligation to your college? No? Then why do you keep picking up your sins and struggles? Let them go. Give them to Jesus, because He’s already paid the price on that cross, took on all of our sin and death, and DEFEATED them when He rose from the grave. Thank you Jesus! #tetelestai
