This week is full of Entrepreneurship events!
Hi Newhouse Students I'm Sean Branagan, the Entrepreneurship Guy at Newhouse, and I will be holding office hours in Food.com to hear about your business ideas, talk about how to find jobs in the startup world, brainstorm the next great media company, and point you to resources to help you find opportunity in today's changing and shifting media landscape. The media industry may look chaotic-- especially if you are nearing graduation, haven't found your special career niche, or... if you are just a bit confused. I think differently. Now is a great opportunity time for ALL media disciplines, and it's a perfect time to set out boldly in new directions and try interesting things. In other words, it's a great time to be a media entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship is not a black art or only a career path for techies or business school grads. And opportunity in the startup world is not limited to founders with an idea for the next big thing: There are small business opportunities. There are lifestyle business opportunities. There are social venture opportunities (where you have a strong social mission). And, there are jobs in the startup world (lots of them, for people with drive and the right experience, attitude and approach), as well as "intra-preneurial" opportunities at big media companies that need to innovate. Let's talk about it. SEE ME AT FOOD.COM during my extended office hours this week and next week: Wed 10-1 and Thurs 2-5. Or drop me a line and let's set up an appointment. My email is easy: [email protected] Entrepreneurship lives at the Newhouse School! See more
Great event from IDEA!! Learn How to Make Mobile Content for SU Student App Contest - WITH FOOD! By now you've heard of the SU Student App competition (http://idea.syr.edu/funding/su-app-competition/), which has a new Journalism Innovation category with a $500 prize. The deadline for submitting ideas is Nov. 9, and your mobile product or app needs to be ready to demo by November 28. "App" sounds like a lot of hard development work for journalists, but it's not. If you have go...od content there are some very easy, inexpensive ways to make it mobile-friendly that qualifies for the contest. Come to one of our two one-hour lunchtime info sessions (Oct. 24, Oct. 29) in Newhouse 2, 494 to learn about the following: Creating multimedia eBooks using Apple's free iBooks Author tools. Creating a WordPress site with a mobile-friendly theme. We'll also have FOOD, so you can learn about how to make mobile apps and chow down at the same time. PLEASE RSVP to one of the two events on EventBrite here if you plan to attend so we can get enough food: http://journovationapp.eventbrite.com Hope to see you there! -Brian
