Last week, students at Duzine Elementary School read Mr. Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown, a story about a tiger who learns that strutting his stripes is more gratifying than living a drab, unfulfilled existence. Both remote and in-person students were then encouraged to wear their inner stripes to school on Friday for the school’s first-ever Mr. Tiger Goes Wild Day. Students dressed in their favorite outfitswild or tamefor a different kind of spirit day. We spotted tigers roaming free all over the playground! Let's give these students a hearty ROAR! of appreciation.

High School students participated in field days last Thursday and Friday by rotating through various wellness-themed activity stations designed to facilitate mindfulness, outdoor fun, arts, and movement. Some of the activities included: nature walks, yoga, badminton, bubbles, corn hole, mask tie-dying, poetry, glitter tattoos, sidewalk art, line dancing, drumming, and martial arts. Students had a blast! Many thanks to the teachers and staff who made this day happen!

Erik Callender the Reptile Guy stopped by Lenape Elementary this week with some of his creeping, crawling and cold-blooded coworkers to spread the good news that green is gold. Lenapeeps got to meet Erik’s menagerie of misunderstood rescued and adopted critters. By the end of the visit, students were well-versed on everything from the strength of keratin to the perils of plastic to the delicacy of mucous membranes. Students were all in! Thank you to Erik and his crew. Bonus Question: Which NPCSD school principal has a terrarium in their office with Madagascar hissing cockroaches?

Four high school seniors in the school's Participation in Government Literature and Economics for Today's Students (PIGLETS) program created a powerful mural that incorporates commentary on the social justice issues which have touched their lives. The mural will be displayed at Peace Park in the Village of New Paltz. For their final project, the students will facilitate a conversation about these important topics and host a small panel discussion to explain the piece and talk... about how they believe it relates to our society. Please join them on Friday, June 4 at 4 PM at the Village of New Paltz's Peace Park on 25 Plattekill Ave. link to art - https://drive.google.com/.../12Br3IAYhHWPE.../view link to student statement of intent - https://docs.google.com/.../1oYejiDQ9D97J2uMd2aC.../edit Many thanks to the Village of New Paltz for hosting the event! Physical Education teachers Dal Veeder and Bill Defino of Lenape Elementary may look like ordinary gym teachers to the average eye, but their superpower is their ability to get students to believe that exercise is FUN. Veeder and Defino insist that their goal is for students to have a good time and blow off steam, whether it's in-person or through remote learning. The coaches agreed that the kids have been champs about following COVID-related protocols so they could keep the fun rolling. Defino added that having smaller groups has actually enhanced skill development and helped them create a more personal relationship with their students. It's been a hoot for the most part because now we can reach students of differing learning styles and interests in ways we did not realize before, he said. There is always a silver lining."

Last week, licensed wildlife rehabilitator Annie Mardiney and some of her feathered friends all flocked to Duzine Elementary School to share their tails of injury and recovery with students. Duzinators got to visit with a set of petite screech owls, an injured barred owl, a half-blind peregrine falcon, an 18-year-old red-tailed hawk, a broad-winged hawk, a rare barn owl, kestrels, a pure albino starling, a fledgling baby grackle, and more. These vulnerable little flapping fellas sure are in good hands now. Thank you to Ms. Mardiney for everything you do!

Do you know about Guardian Summaries? Guardian Summaries are daily or weekly reports (the parent chooses frequency) generated by Google Classroom that include information from all classes in one email. A Guardian Summary does not include grades but does include: Missing workWork not turned in when the summary was sent. Upcoming workWork that’s due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or that’s due in the upcoming week (for weekly emails).... Class activitiesAnnouncements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers. To sign up, parents just need to contact one of their child's teachers for an email invitation. Once they accept it and sign up, it will link to all of their child's classes. If you wish to learn more, or modify your settings, please visit https://support.google.com/edu/classroom/answer/6388136
