This might not be what you would expect from a movie with the word Christmas in the title and with Deanna Durbin and Gene Kelly in starring roles. But this intricate noir spins romance and crime through the unusual rolls of the leading actors. It’s definitely a film worth seeing, and if you have please join us for our free Classic Talkback on Sun 12/13 @ 1pm ET! https://bit.ly/NPCxmas1944

In this modern take on the classic Jack London novel, Martin Eden struggles to rise above his destitute, proletarian circumstances through an intense and passionate pursuit of self-education, hoping to achieve a place among the literary elite. https://kinomarquee.com//5f6cc6d35e8e2500/new-plaza-cinema

Because Christmas Holiday was created in the 1940s and had to abide by the Production Code (a body of rules to limit what can be shown on screen, like a ratings guide). Tension is created through the characters, not necessarily the depiction of graphic physical violenceeven though violence is a main theme in the film. It creates captivating friction through dynamic dialog and lighting. Please watch the film yourself, and then join us on Sun 12/13 at 1pm for a free discussion led by our film experts! https://bit.ly/NPCxmas1944

"Ike White was a musical prodigy. Don't worry if you haven't heard of him: he slipped into obscurity as suddenly as he found fame. His 1976 album 'Changin' Times' sounds terrific, somewhere between Jimi Hendrix and Gil Scott-Heron, despite being recorded (with the help of producer Jerry Goldstein) while Ike was in prison serving a life sentence for murder: he was freed in 1978 at the age of 32, with help from Stevie Wonder." - David Butcher, Radio Times Find more about this unconventional and notorious musician in the documentary, 'The Changin' Times of Ike White'. He'd stood the story on its head, he'd turned a man into a woman and a woman into a man, he'd altered the suspense, he'd rewritten the end... I was rejoicing that I was going to be working with someone like this. Powell on first meeting Pressburger The British film-making partnership of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger together often known as The Archers (the name of their production company) made a series of influential films in the 1940s and 1950s. Horizontal and diagonal lines collide to form names. Cartoon characters unveil stars, as well as the production staff. Waves crash and pages are turned. Memorable film title sequences hook us at the outset and characterize the type of movie or story we are about to experience. Join film historian Max Alvarez for this stylish look at some of most brilliant and stunning title sequences designed by such master artists as Saul and Elaine Bass, Richard Williams, Robert Brownjohn, and Dan Perri. From the films of Alfred Hitchcock (Vertigo, North by Northwest) and Otto Preminger (Carmen Jones) to Francis Ford Coppola (One From the Heart) and Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull), an extraordinary opening credit sequence can sometimes outshine the ensuing narrative. https://bit.ly/ArtofTitles

"One of the film’s odd yet exemplary moments catches Hamilton’s quintet in a rehearsal in a nearby house, performing with a moody, chamber-music-like restraint." - Richard Brody, NewYorker on 'Jazz on a Summer's Day' Check out more on this jazz documentary here: https://bit.ly/npcjazzday

The British film-making partnership of Michael Powell (19051990) and Emeric Pressburger (19021988)together often known as The Archers, the name of their production companymade a series of influential films in the 1940s and 1950s. In a letter to Wendy Hiller in 1942, asking her to appear in Colonel Blimp, Pressburger explicitly set out 'The Archers' Manifesto'. Its five points express the pair's intentions:[3] "1. We owe allegiance to nobody except the financial interests ...which provide our money; and, to them, the sole responsibility of ensuring them a profit, not a loss. 2. Every single foot in our films is our own responsibility and nobody else's. We refuse to be guided or coerced by any influence but our own judgement. 3. When we start work on a new idea we must be a year ahead, not only of our competitors, but also of the times. A real film, from idea to universal release, takes a year. Or more. 4. No artist believes in escapism. And we secretly believe that no audience does. We have proved, at any rate, that they will pay to see the truth, for other reasons than her nakedness. 5. At any time, and particularly at the present, the self-respect of all collaborators, from star to prop-man, is sustained, or diminished, by the theme and purpose of the film they are working on." On these tenants they created 24 films, going no-win awards and create films that last through the decades. The British-German co-production 'The Keeper' dramatizes the life of Bert Trautmann, who as a young man joined Hitler Youth and subsequently the Luftwaffe. It was his peculiar fate to end up in an English prison after WW 2, where he gravitated to the local soccer team and --despite protests and controversy -- eventually became a star goalie for Manchester City, including playing a mid-50s championship match with a broken neck...though the lingering trauma of the war could never be fully extinguished. From our Film Curator, Gary Palmucci: We're featuring a new restoration of Claire Denis' 1999 classic 'Beau Travail' from the elite Janus/Criterion label, which premiered in that year's New York and Sundance Film Festivals. Within her chronicle of a group of French Foreign Legion soldiers in desert training is (literally) a beautifully choreographed hothouse of tension, isolation and desire, principally embodied by its fascinating, enigmatic star, Denis Lavant. I strongl...y recommend reading this recent in-depth NY Times analysis AFTER you've taken in the director's (we showed her film 'High Life' at NYIT) rush of sun-struck images, emotions and pulsating music. https://youtu.be/WnfTHG0uuTs https://www.nytimes.com//da/Beau-Travail-Denis-Lavant.html http://bit.ly/beatrav See more

"A deftly edited mix of archival footage, still imagery, talking-head interviews and in-the-moment narrative, 'His Own Life' which in a perfect world would be a companion piece to Sacks’s book, not the substitute some might make it illuminates details of what can only be called an extraordinary existence." - Glen Kenny, NYTimes @OliverSacksDoc This film explores the life and work of the legendary neurologist and storyteller, as he shares intimate details of his battles w...ith drug addiction, homophobia, and a medical establishment that accepted his work only decades after the fact. Sacks, known for his literary works Awakenings and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, was a fearless explorer of unknown cognitive worlds who helped redefine our understanding of the brain and mind, the diversity of human experience, and our shared humanity.
