New Work Cities 31.10.2020

I decided to take a step back and look at my big-picture mission, so I can better orient my efforts going forward. Overall: I'm focused on fostering belonging. I want to fight the epidemic of isolation in all that I do. To me, that means:... 1. Showing people they have agency 2. Giving them ways find and cultivate belonging through gatherings 3. Giving them places to go to find those gatherings Addressing these three actions in reverse: With New Work Cities, so far, I've been providing support to anyone building a shared spacethrough downloadable resources, group coaching, and one-on-one consulting. Can I be more directed and purposeful to shift people towards that third point? Yes! With Gathering Summit, I've been highlighting the power of meaningful gatherings and looking at ways for more people to get involved. I want to explore this further, so more people can be inspired to create gatherings. Then, there's a third category I'm playing witheducation. I think for people to be effective gatherers or hosts, they need to have some fundamentals that a lot of people tend not to haveso, outside of the worlds of gathering and space, I think it would be useful to focus on those fundamentals. This will take some more refining, but I like the overall trajectory of this so far. How's it look to you?

Check out some things we covered in today's weekly member Q&A! -- FALL RECRUITING... This is one of the best times of year to recruit new memberskids are back in school, people are moving, starting new jobs, coming back from vacation. So let's amp up the member recruiting efforts! Specifically, let's focus on giving people an invitation that is going to stand out from the other spaces they may be researching. A fall goal-setting lunch & learn would be perfectall things being equal, doing it on Tuesday, September 10 (or 11 or 12) would be just about right. Send it out to your non-member lists, especially people who have toured your space in the past. (New Work Cities members get access to program templates that are perfect for this purpose) RECRUITING MEMBERS TO HELP CLEAN We revisited the topic of how to deal with growing resentment when your members don't treat you or your space with respect and what to do about it. I still recommend the "No More Sink Full of Mugs" approach, which involves posting a laminated sign with a whiteboard marker, inviting members to tally the times they've helped clear the sink (or keep the space clean in general). Celebrating positive contributions sets a great cultural expectation for everyone to follow! The full eBook where I talk about this, plus the downloadable signage, are included in the Coworking Toolkit, which is included with membership or can be purchased a-la-carte. TALKING ABOUT WEWORK So many people ask me about WeWork. I imagine it happens for a lot for you too! So I'm working on an idea to write down all my thoughts and turn it into a product. I'd love to know what questions you would want me to addresshow to talk about it to people who ask, how to position yourself, where I see it all going, etc. As a paying member of the group, you'll get whatever I produce either for free or at a severe discount. Will you help me make the thing by taking a quick survey here? https://nwc.typeform.com/to/TNLe8r -- Check the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxF-BL4op0s Rock on! Tony

Whew, good weekly meeting with the members this week! We're working on two new initiatives I wanted to tell you about: Coworking Cohorts and Coordinated Work Sprints. -- COWORKING COHORTS... I've mentioned Cohorts already here, but just to recap: we're going to form little Mastermind groups around the different core areas of focus that many space owners are focused on. Each group will get to know each other a little better, set goals, and have a regular check-in to make progress towards their goals. It will be super effective in helping people without asking too much time and energy. The other new effort is coordinated Work Sprints. -- COORDINATED WORK SPRINTS Work Sprints are super easy to run and provide a ton of value to current and prospective coworking space members, so we're going to work together to implement them across our member spaces. Then, we're going to take it a step furtherwe're going to track what people achieve in their respective gatherings and share those accomplishments as a group. This will help us show just how much good focus work gets done and all the amazing things people do in participating spaces! Want to participate? There's still time to get in on both of these programs. Send me a message now and let me know!

Update! I'm working on a prototype for a new product to help people better plan their business models. I'm learning lots as I go. Did you know that you can embed a live Google Spreadsheet in a Google Doc? It doesn't refresh instantly, but all you have to do is hit a button to update the values. Super handy!

The Coworking Toolkit is one of the things I'm most proud of having built in the past couple of years. It's partly a compilation of materials we developed as we built and ran New Work City, supplemented by worksheets and templates I created specifically to help people manage their spaces better. It's got a TON of handy stuff in it. Anyone building a space can save a lot of time and moneyjust copy our stuff!
