Today we salute Elisa Holtzman, who has proudly served as an operating room nurse at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital & Weill Cornell Medicine for 50 years, and counting, as she likes to say! Elisa's passion for her patients and team keep her motivated every day. She plans to continue her work until retirement and Elisa says that will be no time soon. When she is not working, she likes to spend time with her son and her Goldendoodle named Danger. It was a day Leslie Hynes Guido will never forget November 7, 2019: the day she was diagnosed with #TriplePositive, Stage 2 #BreastCancer. She exercised regularly, kept a healthy diet and scheduled preventative appointments, but when a self-exam a few weeks earlier revealed a lump in one of her breasts, she knew her life would never be the same. Fortunately, Leslie’s decades in health care had familiarized her with many of the region’s oncologists, so she knew to turn to Ne...wYork-Presbyterian Queens’ Dr. Beth Siegel the breast cancer surgeon who would eventually perform a #DoubleMastectomy that December. Honoring Leslie’s request to continue her care journey closer to home, Dr. Siegel then referred her to #NYPLawrence’s Dr. Carolyn Wasserheit, under whose direction she would begin immunotherapy and chemotherapy later that winter. Then came #COVID19. Just as I thought my entire world turned upside down, the pandemic happened, said Leslie. I live by myself and am at an increased virus risk having an immunocompromised system, so I quickly realized this cancer experience would be far from anything I had ever imagined. Her Lawrence care team became her closest confidantes and only human contact through the height of the outbreak, and even connected Leslie with a breast cancer support group for emotional support. Additionally, she credits the ongoing efforts of #NYPQueens’ Dr. Jerry Chang, who guided her through her first two reconstructive surgeries and plans to do so a third time in a few months. Now semi-retired and living in Florida, Leslie is ready to explore her next stage of life. Having gone through all of this with the help of #NYP, I feel like it’s now important to share my experience with others, she said. It’s now time to give back.
