New York Kali Mandir 01.07.2021

Dear Devotees, Seventy four years back, the land of the Vedas and the Gita, that gave the world Aryabhata, Shankaracharya, Buddha, Ramakrishna and Gandhi declared freedom from the clutches of British rule. The spiritual purity and moral authority that India had always possessed, was reinvigorated by its newly found political freedom. Years later, Gandhiji’s Ahimsha found resonance in civil rights movement in US, Yoga has become synonymous with good living and high fashion,... and Indians lead some of the greatest organizations in the world. A woman of Indian descent could very well lead this country someday in the foreseeable future. At NYKM, we are proud to foster an environment for the next generation of Indian leaders and professionals, artists and businessmen, who would have an understanding of our culture and values. Our temple is a shining example of the intersection of higher purpose, entrepreneurship and diligence. Hence, despite the challenges of navigating in the post-COVID world, we are expanding our Mandir premises by buying the adjacent property (600 Seaman Avenue) on Aug 19, and celebrating Durga and Kali Puja in October under very strict health protocols. We would arrange for the devotees to inform us in advance of their visit to the Temple during the Pujas and would limit the amount of time, they would be able to spend at the Temple premises. We would do our best to space out the timings so that devotees can be safe when they visit us. Pushpanjali will be arranged every hour after 12 pm at the outside tent so that devotees can maintain distance from each other and are not rushing for time. The Working Committee requests your participation for the Puja e-brochure that would be published on the NYKM website this year. Please submit your articles, travelogues, poems, stories, paintings by September end. We welcome pictures of the temple celebrations and activities, for the center-spread of the e-brochure. Please send your contributions ASAP to [email protected]. Sponsorships for the Durga Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja and advertisements for the Puja brochure are greatly appreciated, as we would need all your help for a successful Sharadotsav. You can inform us about your sponsorship intent and amount to Samiran Chakraborty @ 516.467.7056 or send an email to [email protected]. If you want to contribute to the temple, please do so by writing a check payable to NYKM or donating at our website http://nykalimandir.net/donate.html. Every donation, no matter how big or how small, is going to be critical for NYKM’s evolution into the next phase. We look forward to your full hearted support and cooperation in this endeavor to create an institution that would have a lasting impact on our community. Best regards, NYKM Working Committee

Dear Devotees, It has been a couple of weeks since we last communicated regarding the closure of our temple for everyone’s safety. In the meanwhile, the world around us has changed in a way, that we could not have imagined even a few weeks earlier. The deadly pandemic is claiming thousands of lives every day in the greatest and the most powerful country in the world. As someone said, the most challenging of circumstances test our character and shine a light on the best amongs...t us. Our frontline doctors and nurses, EMT personnel and others in the medical profession, are bravely fighting this cursed virus. With limited protective equipment to keep themselves safe, every day, they go about their jobs, risking their lives, dedicated to their profession and committed to their cause of serving patients and the sick in our community. And then, there are those, who show immense courage and magnanimity in serving those on the frontlines. We are very proud of our Amit da. Mr. Amit Guha, a long time devotee of Ma Kali is supplying pizzas everyday to the Long Island Jewish Medical Center during lunch hour through his Riviera V Pizzeria. New York Kali Mandir is donating $1000 to this cause. We encourage all of you to donate generously to this wonderful cause and help Amit da help those doctors and nurses during this crisis. For details, please visit the following website: https://rivierav.com/ In normal times, we would have celebrated Basanti Puja and Ram Navami this week. May be next yearwhen we are better prepared as a society. Please take all necessary precautions, listen to government guidance and stay safe. May Ma Kali bless you all. ~Regards, Working Committee New York Kali Mandir

New York Kali Mandir planning our next phase From the heights of Kailash to the shores of Kanyakumari, from the pristineness of Amarnath to the resilience of... Somnath, from the beauty of Konark, to the divinity of Dakshineshwar, from the reverence of Tirumala to the passion of Sabarimala these are symbols of resolute bhakti, of irredeemable belief, and the truth of dharma! Time and again, Hindus have burnished their faith by the temples they have built through centuries and have chosen to worship in. It is the quest of creating something bigger than ourselves that would not only provide spiritual fulfillment but stand for something more our culture our belief system, our sacrifice. In every case, the institutions have outlived the generations that built them. They outgrow their brick and mortar structures and become a repository of hope, aspirations, and spiritualism. The last 4 years at our Kali Temple have been dedicated to paying down our debt and stabilizing the Balance Sheet of the temple. The question to ask ourselves now is what next? The vision for New York Kali Mandir is such a landmark institution, that provides succor to countless devotees and embraces everyone with warmth and humility. Some of the ideas for which we solicit your feedback: Building a senior center for senior citizens around the temple premises Developing a Guest Facility, for a cost-effective temporary accommodation Running periodic medical camps for health check-ups for needy citizens Organizing Weekend School for Bengali language and culture to keep our traditions alive Having summer camps and field trips for our children to develop team spirit and kinship School to teach kids Indian dance forms, or songs or train them on Tabla or Dhol An eco-friendly mandir by having solar panels that pay for all our electricity needs Periodic religious classes or Satsang catering to different groups in our society Being fully compliant with all kinds of town and city regulations in our facilities is not a choice but necessity. As our devotee community grows, we need to expand our premises by strategically acquiring properties that come up for sale around the temple. We need resources to turn the above vision into reality, even a small part of it. We need more members, more monthly contributions, higher fund raising, volunteer efforts, and more extensive word of mouth referrals. Currently, only a small part of our community knows about us and visits us. A large percentage of our patrons visits us only on big occasions like Durga Puja and Kali Puja. They will visit us more often, if we can become more relevant in their life. Ordinary folks can do extraordinary things when they get together for a higher cause. Please share with us your ideas that will make NYKM the temple of our dreams! Let us create an institution that we can be all so proud of. Be a part of it together we will create history once again! May Ma Kali continue to shower her blessings on this temple and her devotees. Wish you all a very joyful Sharodiya season! Hope you have a wonderful time!
