New York Outrigger 02.07.2021

Dear Ohana: We are devastated by the anti-Asian hate acts here in NYC and around the country, most recently with the painful loss of lives in Atlanta. The intersections of racism, misogyny, anti-elders, and anti-immigrants is on full display. We hold all of our ohana in our hearts as many of us worry about the safety of our loved ones and ourselves. New York Outrigger is committed to anti-racist policies and practices on and off the water. We do not tolerate racism, discrimination, or injustice in any form. Our community of volunteers spans a wide range of age, ethnicity, gender, and dis/ability. We remain in solidarity with our volunteers, friends, and global ohana to uphold ALOHA in the face of hate.

Recently @newyorkoutrigger partnered with @hudsonriverriders to host an online Talk Story event for our volunteer-members. This Black-led nonprofit has a mission to "provide access to the Hudson River and develop the next generation of environmental stewards." We thank @hudsonriverriders for sharing in storytelling on the Hudson River's past, present, and future and look forward to continuing our collaboration with our friends up the river in Yonkers, as we share a similar ap...proach in outreach, coaching, and building community, as well as being invested in diversifying the outdoors. "Much thanks to Chevaughn, who is clearly a very inspired and inspiring person. I was moved by his recounting of his history/relationship with the Hudson and The Palisades, eventually fulfilling his aspirations to make the crossing himself. It's clear how he and @hudsonriverriders as well as @newyorkoutrigger believe in the importance and strength of community and diversity, and are devoted to helping others fulfill their aspirations and continually become better versions of themselves." "I had a blast talking with Chev about the @hudsonriverriders It’s really wonderful to know that there are other organizations like @newyorkoutrigger working to make water sports accessible for all. I think there are some very clear, actionable steps that we can all take towards making a better community on the water and making sure everyone’s voice is heard." "Diversity in the outdoors is active in our local waterways. Equitable access for BIPOC communities must move beyond counting participation to building power and leadership." See more

New York Outrigger is a community rooted in aloha. We practice the Polynesian tradition of outrigger canoe paddling on the waters of Lenapehoking, the traditional home of the Lenape people. Just as unity propels us forward in our canoes, we stand in solidarity with our Black ohana to fight racism together. Our mission is to increase access to NYC's waterways. And we demand equitable access for our Black and Brown ohana. Our outreach will prioritize Black, Indigenous, and o...ther communities of color, so that we may strengthen our connections with each other and with the water. Mahalo to our volunteers for building a safe space for sharing our love of paddling. Together, we can achieve more than we can alone. With aloha, New York Outrigger See more

Update on NYO 2020 Season: Due to New York’s stay at home measures, the Pier 66 Boathouse is closed and NYO is not operating in-person paddling and outreach. To stay connected, we are moving our community engagement online and rolling out virtual programming for returning volunteer-members and the public in phases this summer. We look forward to seeing you on the water when group gatherings for recreational activities are deemed safe for New Yorkers. Until then, NYO will do our part to keep New York safe, and we send love and aloha to all impacted by Covid-19.

Out of concern and respect for our NYC community, NYO has cancelled all Meetup events until the start of the season. We will share updates as the season draws closer.
