Mannes School of Music's New York String Orchestra Seminar

Congratulations NYSOS alumnus Anthony McGill for this well-deserved recognition! We were fortunate to have Anthony with us as a student many moons ago, and even more fortunate that he has returned so many times over the years to work with students. If you have heard him play, you too are fortunate. But now, we also have many opportunities to hear him speak (just do a little searching online) about his commitment to "ensure openness and opportunity for all kids, regardless of background, race, religion, sexual orientation,... That’s my No. 1 goal and passion." He is warm, both optimistic and pragmatic, generous, and compelling. And he calls the rest of us in the classical music world to join him in this work.

It will be very different, it won't be in NYC, sadly - it won't be at Carnegie Hall, but students will still get to work with Jaime Laredo and our amazing faculty, will still get to meet & socialize exceptional future colleagues from across the country, will still become part of a tradition that includes over 2500 amazing alumni. As many of you may have heard, Carnegie Hall will not be presenting concerts through the end of 2020. Like everyone in the music world, we are saddened by this news, but appreciate the Hall's commitment to the health & safety of artists and audience members alike. And of course, more personally, we are deeply disappointed by what this will mean for the 2020 New York String Orchestra Seminar. For the first time in more than 50 years, the NYSO will not perform live from Carnegi...e Hall. However, we at the Seminar remain committed to our core mission of reaching an amazing group of exceptional student musicians and introducing them to the Seminar's musical philosophy through a combination of orchestral and chamber music experiences with some of the world's most celebrated artists. We are currently exploring our options and hope to announce what format the 2020 New York String Orchestra Seminar will take by the end of July. We thank you for your patience and understanding - and for the words of those of you who have been reaching out to express concern, optimism and share what the Seminar has meant to you personally.
