New York Urban League Football Classic 15.07.2021

We would like to share with you that the 2016 Football Classic is postponed to 2017. We made this difficult decision because while many people showed great interest in supporting the game, their budgets did not allow them to support at the levels we had hoped for this year. But our prospects are bright for 2017! Next year’s game will be a part of Howard University’s and Morgan State University’s 150th Year Celebration. We will continue to engage with you regarding potential opportunities for the Game in 2017. In the meantime, the New York Urban League is still committed to raising money to support the Whitney M. Young, Jr Scholarship Fund. This year we will be hosting a suite fundraiser at Yankee Stadium in August and a brunch in September. Information will be forthcoming, and we hope you will join us. - NYUL Team

We would like to share with you that the New York Urban League Board of Directors has decided to not host a Football Classic this Fall. This difficult decision was made because while many individual community and family members (including our own) showed great interest in supporting the game, we do not have the sponsorship support to make the Football Classic financially successful. Over the next few months we will be creating a task force to see how we can reinvigorate the... Football Classic and bring it to new audiences in the future. In the meantime, the New York Urban League is still committed to raising money to support the Whitney M. Young, Jr Scholarship Fund, and fight the roll back of important services and supports during this challenging political time. If you make a donation to the annual fund of $50 or more before July 5th at midnight, your donation will be entered in a drawing* to win: A pair of Yankees Suite Level tickets for July 31st at 7:00pm (vs. Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium)** a $250 value AND get the priceless experience of going onto Yankee Field during the game. There are 8,000 people within New York City who rely on our services and the generosity of individuals like you. Let’s stand together and make a difference. You are one of our strongest supporters and we need your support more than ever. Please take a moment and donate $25, $50, $100, $250 or more to our annual fund. *Winners will be contacted via email by July 7; must claim by July 14. **Travel to game not included. - NYUL Team-

URBAN LEAGUE MOVEMENT SUPPORTS PEACEFUL PROTESTS, THOROUGH INVESTIGATIONS IN BATON ROUGE AND FALCON HEIGHTS As the nation grieves the deaths of Alton Sterling a...nd Philando Castile at the hands of police in Louisiana and Minnesota, the National Urban League and our local affiliates have called for a thorough investigation of both shootings, and a comprehensive evaluation of police training and policies. As these killings continue to shock the conscience of Louisianans and the nation, we look forward to the day when hastiness on behalf of police, poor training of police and aggression on behalf of police are behind us. The Urban League Movement has put forth a plan for police reform that includes review and revision of police use of deadly force policies, comprehensive retraining of all police officers, the appointment of special prosecutors to investigate police misconduct and widespread use of body cameras and dashboard cameras. As the shootings and the protests that followed them demonstrate, there still is work to be done to build a more trusting relationship between our communities and those sworn to protect them. Coordination among local leaders, friends and neighbors and law enforcement is critically important in these trying times, and our affiliates in New Orleans and Minneapolis, led by Erika McConduit-Diggs and Steven Belton, will be leading the way. The Urban League movement focuses to build inclusive communities that not only recognize African American humanity, but maximize the individual and collective contributions of all in our society. As we work to dismantle systems that humiliate, unjustly murder and continuously devalue black lives in America, our faith and works will be with the community as we strive to create sustainable change and improve upon the quality of life in our region and our nation.
