Think all invasive plants are just weeds? Think again! This towering giant is Tree of Heaven, a highly invasive tree originally native to East Asia. While not a... pressing concern for our forests, Tree of Heaven commonly invades urban and suburban areas, growing in lawns, parking lots, and roadsides. One way to identify Tree of Heaven (especially when this tall) is the bark. It's said to resemble the texture of a cantaloupe. Right now Tree of Heaven is a major concern because it is the preferred host of the invading Spotted Lanternfly. With its preferred host already present, this means Spotted Lanternfly will be able to spread that much faster throughout our region. If you want to help, you can help us find the Tree of Heaven's throughout our region before it's too late! iMap has a volunteer Tree of Heaven and Spotted Lanternfly detection survey that is looking for new members: https://www.nyimapinvasives.org/slf

They successfully convinced us that the exotic turf grasses, mowers, fertilizers, pesticides and blowers are part of the American tradition. Today, we know that... conventional lawns are no longer sustainable. It is time to revive the beautiful native landscape in our yard. Landscapers who take themselves seriously and care for the future will move on and adapt their services. www.healthyyards.org See more
