As the solemn occasion of Memorial Day comes to an close, we take heart in the strength of our community honoring its soldiers who gave their life for our great country. And as the day closes, we note the strength of the families of firefighters. While they marched off early this morning to be ready to parade and honor the veterans, their families knew they do it because it is important to show our strength as a local community of volunteers. Most parades we join have a co...mpetitive component, meaning there's trophies awarded based on a myriad of points awarded and subtracted to reach the best fire departments measured in a friendly way. But, if you noticed today the three fire departments in the Town marched together as one big unit, just like they go in together on mutual aid calls. It's our town. Our families. Our friendships. Volunteers. We do it for everyone. We pride ourselves in giving something to the community, and when the time comes you need help, we all join together to get it done. We thank every one of them. You should keep track of weather updates this afternoon. By dinner, expect a good chance of rain/thunderstorms.

Remember as a kid we were taught to look both ways before crossing the street? Then in "driver's ed" it became vogue to say look twice before entering a roadway. Left, right, left again. Now it has been recognized that it is especially important to look twice, because motorcycles, bicycles, and even pedestrians are more common as Spring and Summer get underway. If your brain did not "register" the object in the road, the difference in the "image" your brain registers a second or two later from the second look can save a life, and maybe your own. Drive safely. Let's all drive safely. For each other.

ROAD CLOSURE: Rte. 203 in the Village of Valatie (where it intersects with Main Street) is closed from there to where it intersects with Road and Gun Club road by Heim Fuel due to a car/truck accident with wires down. Plan an alternate road and avoid the area for an hour or two until things change. UPDATE: At 2:15, National Grid estimated it will take them until 4:00 - 4:15 and possibly later to re-open the roadway to traffic.

We sorely miss Mike, and take solace his pain is gone. Please consider this nice gesture to help his wife and family.

On May 31st, we honor those in the armed forces who sacrificed their life for us. Memorial Day is reminder that we are free because soldiers defended our country, some who died doing so. Although many mark it as the beginning of the summer and a three day weekend, please know for many it is reminder of family, friends, and loved ones who are no longer with us.

We have heard of a reliable report of a bear being in the Concourse, near Kinderhook Lake. Since bears can and will swim across bodies of water, we cannot say where it went, or where it might go. We also heard a bear damaged property in the West Shore Drive area. Whether it was the same bear of not, we sure do not know. that said, hear is some helpful information: https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6995.html

Most people in the community know Mike Bravo. Mike is an Ichabod Crane alumni. He has served his community with the Niverville Fire Department, Stuyvesant Fire Department, and Valatie Rescue Squad. Mike also served honorably as a United States Marine completing several deployments. Mike is a loving father and husband. Within the last year Mike was diagnosed with cancer and after a long battle has been placed on hospice. It is clear Mike loves his country, his community, and his brothers and sisters in emergency services. At Monday nights general meeting members of the department voted to make Mike a Honorary Life member of the department after serving 16 years. We love you Mike!

With so many commuters in or passing through our district, we thought we would pass along this reminder about getting an EZPASS tag to get your discount on various tolls throughout the east coast. As you may know, the Thruway has removed the toll booths and offers a discount to EZPASS users.

In October, we had a spike in calls when we responded to 15 due to the storm. With 24 for the month, we have handled 115 calls for service in 2020! Perhaps calls for service will turn out to be one of the normal things we see this year. If you have not already done so this Fall, please use this coming week's good weather to inspect your heating appliance and clean the chimney.
