Local artists do so much to support the Noble Maritime Collection, and we are proud to be a part of the cultural community with them. As they do every year, our friends at Staten Island Arts are offering grants to artists, non-profit organizations, and collectives who have ideas to create and present work in the borough in 2021. Applications are due at the end of this month, and if you are a first-time applicant, you must attend a seminar, the last of which is tomorrow, January 13.

This monoprint by Salvatore Busacca is available in The 32nd Annual John A. Noble Art Auction. Mount Marcy is the highest summit in the Adirondack Mountains, and the highest point in New York State. The Mohawk Nation called it Tewawe'éstha (it pierces) and the Algonquin Nation of Canada called it Tahawus (cloud-splitter). Tewawe'éstha is the only Indigenous place name for a mountain range in the area currently used. Sal Busacca’s interpretation of the mountain is somewha...t abstract, and almost appears like an ocean wave at the opposite end of the elevation scale. Of late, Staten Island artist Ann Marie McDonnell has used botanical subjects for her prismatic experimentation with mixing mediums. She would use real flowers from her garden, enhanced with paint and set in front of one of prints, and then photograph the arrangement as a still life. In The Purple Vase Still Life, she further reinterprets the classic floral still life by ever so slightly applying a geometric lens to the organic shapes. She is also playing with mediums with... this piece; it was originally a print, which she then photographed and reprinted on canvas. The 32nd Annual John A. Noble Art Auction is in less than two weeks! This lithograph is one of four pieces by Noble available. In 1966, John A. Noble began working on a series of lithographs portraying the heretofore unrecorded tasks of a single seaman alongside this mast and its rigging. Noble ultimately completed five prints in this series, of which this is the first. Of this print Noble wrote, Having spent many hours aloft, it is a subject that is very close to me. The... man in loneliness and height and dusk above a winter sea; the mightiness of the rigging, chain, hemp, and wire of a 2,000-ton schooner; the masthead and crosstrees of one of the largest masts ever made by man are the elements of a common American scene never beheld in this or any other country." John A. Noble (1913-1983), Oncoming Night, Man and Mast #1, Lithograph, Edition 300, 1966, Gift of James M. Scott, in memory of Dr. Dennis J. Bill Higgins spent a lot of his youth on a houseboat moored in the Fresh Killsand that led to his connection to maritime themes. He captured this dramatic image earlier this year when the Senator John J. Marchi Staten Island ferry boat was at Caddell Dry Dock for a paint job. This original painting is the second piece by Staten Island artist Robert Padovano in The 32nd Annual John A. Noble Art Auction on November 14 at 7 PM. The glass house at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden contains plants that would otherwise not grow outdoors in New York City’s climate, and recalls a conservatory that used to be on site when the sailors’ lived here. Staten Islander Robert Padovano is well known for his maritime paintings and cityscapes, and Red Poppies fits nicely into his body of work as it showcases his intense use of color and ability to convey an almost surreal luminescent quality. One can say that Padovano’s work has the magic of Technicolor, and indeed this print of the original painting recalls The Wizard of Oz, in which the red poppy flower figured prominently. This is one of two pieces by Padovano available at ...The 32nd Annual John A. Noble Art Auction on November 14. This etching by Bill Murphy is available in The 32nd Annual John A. Noble Art Auction and is from a series called Eulogy for Kreischerville, a group of images inspired by the remnants of the Kreischer Brickworks and the Kreischerville town on Staten Island’s South Shore. We are pleased to present Haunted Tales of Old Staten Island, a virtual lecture by historian Patricia Salmon. Travel back to a darker, quieter Staten Island, before automobiles and street lights illuminated the roadways, when British soldiers trotted through our current neighborhoods on horseback, and strange occurrences happened around every bend. Pat recounts the folklore of local historic houses, and talks about the mysterious characters who shaped the borough's spooky past. Haunted Tales of Old Staten Island kicks off our Noble on Watch "NOW" series of virtual lectures and concerts. We are excited to release a full schedule of events soon.
