Over 20% of people detained in unsanitary and overcrowded conditions of U.S. ICE detention centers are testing positive for #COVID19, yet ICE is dramatically under-reporting cases and is failing to release detainees. Despite ICE’s inability to control virus spread, over 450 deportation flights have taken place in 2020, with nearly a dozen countries in Latin America and the Caribbean confirming deportees returned with the virus At the IRC, we are calling for individuals detained by ICE to be released from unsanitary and unsafe facilities, a halt to deportations while a pandemic is underway, as well as support to those awaiting their legal status. As the world marks #BreastfeedingAwarenessWeek, meet some of the mothers and their babies at the IRC’s clinic for children in Maiduguri, northeast Nigeria. Binta Hassan and her son Ali. Amma Paul and her daughter. Hawwa and one of her twins.... Falmata and her son Tuja. At this clinic, moms and babies receive treatment, nutritious meals and information about how to keep their children safe. As part of the IRC's work at the clinic, new mothers are encouraged to breastfeed and avoid giving their babies water. A common misconception in parts of northeast Nigeria is that breast milk alone will not be enough to sustain a baby, but water can have harmful bacteria that make children sick. Swipe to see the happy and healthy moms and babies in northeast Nigeria that we're proud to celebrate at the IRC!
