Daylight Saving Time ends. As you move your clocks back an hour, don’t forget to change the batteries in your smoke detectors and other home safety devices. Whi...le the colder weather is starting to settle in around us, here are a few reminders. Have and check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors weekly. They save lives. 1. Three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. 2. More than one-third (38 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present. 3. The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms. 4. Get out and stay out. Have your heating systems checked, cleaned and inspected. It could save you hundreds of dollars with the cost of fuel and or an unnecessary breakdown during the winter months. Have your gas/wood burning stoves, pellet stove, furnace and fire place chimneys cleaned and inspected this could prevent unwanted visits from your local fire department. www.today.com//chimney-cleaning-how-often-get-sweep-inspec Carbon Monoxide What is Carbon Monoxide? * Carbon monoxide, or CO, is an odorless, colorless gas that can kill you. Where is CO found? * CO is found in fumes produced any time you burn fuel in cars or trucks, small engines, stoves, lanterns, grills, fireplaces, gas ranges, or furnaces. CO can build up indoors and poison people and animals who breathe it. What are the symptoms of CO poisoning? * The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. CO symptoms are often described as flu-like. If you breathe in a lot of CO it can make you pass out or kill you. People who are sleeping can die from CO poisoning before they have symptoms. How can I prevent CO poisoning in my home? * Install a battery-operated or battery back-up CO detector in your home and check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. Place your detector where it will wake you up if it alarms, such as outside your bedroom. Consider buying a detector with a digital readout. This detector can tell you the highest level of CO concentration in your home in addition to alarming. Replace your CO detector every five years. Do not use surge protectors to plug any electrical heaters into, they must be plug directly into wall sockets. In the case of power failures do not run generators indoors or connect them directly into your home. The only proper way is the use of a transfer switch and it is highly recommended to have one properly installed. Minerva Fire & Rescue is here to serve our residents in their time of need. Our members our trained in a multitude of emergency situations and are available 24/7. And of course we are always looking for interested people to join our growing organization. It's been ONE year this North Hudson became an island for majority of the day. We were blocked from all directions either due to flooding or trees on power lines. It was definitely a day to remember.
