A great conversation unfolded this afternoon with a PCS East facilitator about outdoor learning this year. Besides some of the more expected benefits -- nature studies, emergent curriculum (see today’s footprint finds that evolved into an day-long inquiry and observation), the physical well-being that accompanies being outside, the free and ready materials, authentic real-world learning, the joyful, curious kids -- and some of the drawbacks (um, it’s cold! and wet!), she ment...ioned an incredibly valuable opportunity that’s arisen that she hadn’t anticipated. . I don’t think I’ve ever been able to observe the children so carefully and for so long before she said. It’s like, when we’re free to just let them explore, when the learning is all just right there for us, we have so many more opportunities to observe the kids and see how their interests and skills are developing. Even things like pencil grips and letter learning -- it’s happening out there, while they’re drawing with sticks in the snow or arranging rocks into letters. And we can see it and pick up on it. It’s amazing! . We’re feeling so grateful for the many unexpected opportunities that are emerging from outdoor learning this year, as well as our amazingly perceptive facilitators who are seizing every moment (even the wet and cold ones )! . @earlychildhoodpcs3s #outdoorclassrooms #outdoorlearning #followthechildren #freetolearn #earlychildhoodeducation See more

Wow! @sixthandseventh_at_pcs we’re so impressed with the very first episode of VDN: Very Decent News! . During our all school Zoom community meeting this morning, Sixth and Seventh graders debuted the first episode of the monthly hyper-local news feature they are writing, performing, filming and producing with the guidance of their facilitator, Alex, a veteran student newscaster and producer. The students are doing it all from writing scripts to conducting interviews, r...ecording live musical performances for the intro, learning to film the segments and editing footage. Check out the first episode featuring a renewed PCS recycling program, the story behind the giant rocket in the hallway, and signs of spring popping up around campus! https://peconiccommunityschool.org/blognew . Wow, PCS! We’re just *20 gifts* away from meeting our #GivingTuesday community participation goal of #100gifts in one day! Let’s do this! . These third graders are #giving 40 backpacks filled with essential supplies, toiletries, snacks and handmade scarves to neighbors with need through @maureenshaven. We’re so proud and inspired! Thank you @third_at_pcs and @statebags and all of the PCS third grade families who contributed to this giveback project. . We are so grateful to e...veryone who has supported PCS so far today. If you’re able to give today, we hope you will consider giving to PCS. Your contribution not only builds the global wave of generosity started by #GivingTuesday, it strengthens our PCS community and keeps our students connected and learning no matter where this winter takes us. . #grateful #givingtuesday #togetherwegive #100giftsinoneday #soclose See more

Peconic Community School 10.11.2020

#GivingTuesday is just three short days away, and it’s a favorite at PCS! We love being a part of this global day of generosity and participating in the world’s largest giving movement. . Each year, PCS students seize the opportunity to give, and this year is no exception. Classe have worked with their facilitators to identify authentic needs in their communities and are already working on service projects that we’ll be completing and sharing throughout the day on Tuesday! .... #GivingTuesday is an important day for PCS as well. As an independent school we rely on the generosity of our community of supporters to help us keep this little school running, especially during a challenging year like 2020. As we’ve faced these challenges and are seeing a fall semester of *in-person, outdoor learning* on our newly expanded campus draw to a close, we’re feeling so incredibly grateful for the opportunity we’ve had to come together this fall and get to know each other not only as individuals, but as a community of committed, adventurous and caring learners. Each day has cemented the feeling that we’re in this together. . And this different year has inspired us to approach #GivingTuesday with a bit of a different fundraising goal. This year, instead of working toward a one-day , we’re hoping to achieve a #GivingTuesday participation milestone to strengthen our community. We know that each and every gift makes a difference, and each and every gesture of support adds not only to #GivingTuesday’s global wave of generosity but to our collective spirit of togetherness. We invite you to be in it together with us as we hope to achieve 100% community giving participation this #GivingTuesday. Every contribution truly makes a difference, fortifying our community and keeping PCS students learning, connected and caring. We look forward to Tuesday and sharing the kids’ progress on their #GivingTuesday projects! . . . #GivingTuesday #globalgivingmovement #makeadifference#kidswhocare . A special thank you to #richmondrealty #ICVMgroup and @statebags for sponsoring supplies for the students’ #givingtuesday give-back projects! See more
