North Brooklyn Community Boathouse 09.12.2020

Your Community Boathouse Needs Your Help The North Brooklyn Community Boathouse (aka North Brooklyn Boat Club) has a mission; to give as many people as possible the extraordinary experience of paddling (safely and responsibly) on NYC’s amazing waterways. And then, help paddlers become stewards of our endangered but thriving estuary environment. NBCB offers:... -Environmental education programs for local schools and community groups -Regular free public paddles -Birdwatching, shoreline tree counting and other themed paddles -Workshops on tides & currents and factors in trip planning -Training in paddling safety & skills -Knot-tying, paddle carving and other nautical crafts Since NBCB’s founding almost 10 years ago, this non-profit (501c3) all-volunteer community organization has put several thousand people, including hundreds of schoolkids, on the water many paddling a boat for the first time. In addition to our regular programs, we have a great nautical book club, co-sponsored a Paddling Film Festival, hosted paddling-related book readings, survival skills courses, open-fire cooking classes, boat-building and many many other amazing experiences for members and the public. Here’s the thing: We’ve kept our annual membership fee low (at $40, lower by far than any other NYC boathouse) to enable as many people as possible to join and we typically raise a large portion of the funds needed to operate through big fundraising parties in our boatyard. The pandemic has knocked out our fundraising and the COVID-related restrictions on paddling and public gatherings have made it more difficult to recruit and retain members. The bottom line is that we’re looking at a shortfall of roughly $19,000 this year. We are asking for donations of any amount to help us make up that deficit and keep us afloat so that we can offer all of our innumerable paddling and education programs when the pandemic lifts. We are excited to announce that Giving Tuesday Donations will be MATCHED up to $1000.00!!! https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/nbbc Thank you for supporting your community boathouse and hope to see you out on the water soon!

Inspired by John McPhee's Pine Barrens and Tom Brown's The Tracker (thank you @Brad Kerr!) we had been planning a paddle expedition through the Barrens this spring. This remarkable film from 1975 (thanks Kris Timken!) will have to suffice for now...
