Here's today's PHOTO OF THE DAY!!! While walking deep in the woods of Altona, New York, a visitor might be astonished to stumble across the decaying remains of ...a massive dam, standing stonehenge-like for the last 100 years, high and dry among the pine trees. This is the crumbling ruin of the infamous "Million Dollar Dam" seen stretching across the Altona flatrock in this amazing aerial photo. Built against the better judgement of his chief engineers, the dam was part of an ambitious hydro-electric project by wealthy industrialist William H. Miner. An attempt to provide cheap electric power for his nearby estate and to the citizens of the Altona / Chazy area. The construction represented one of the largest projects of its kind in the history of the North Country and, given the remoteness of the location, would be a daunting endeavor in the 21st Century, let alone at the dawn of the 20th. The work was plagued by problems from the start. At least one laborer is known to have lost his life and the undertaking soon became an engineering nightmare, going well past the planned completion date. Informed that the ridge line bordering the site (known as "Cobblestone Hill") refused to hold water, Miner responded in typical fashion, ordering his men to coat the entire hillside in concrete. Thousands of tons of cement were laid, forming a vast moonscape known as the "scar pit," where, even today, little grows except through cracks in its weathered surface. When finished, the monolithic structure rose 40 feet tall and stretched nearly a mile long from end to end. The gates of the dam were finally closed in 1915, yet its reservoir took another two years to fill, eventually holding back a new lake containing over a BILLION gallons of water. However, continuing issues with the local geology, combined with expensive equipment failure eventually spelled the end of the "Million Dollar Dam." After failing to meet expectations, the dam was abandoned after just seven years of operation. Holes were blasted in its massive facade with dynamite and today the haunting ruin sits strangely out of place and mostly forgotten, deep in the Altona woods. I found this photo while looking through my mom's old photos. We lived at 38 Howard Ave. until I was 10 or so. I have a lot of memories of Malone.
