Horse owners! New York State has been reporting several cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in New York including cases in St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties. This is a mosquito borne virus and regular vaccination can help prevent this disease in your horse. If your horse is not up to date on it’s core vaccines this year, give us a call!
We are excited to officially Facebook welcome Dr. Amy Kraus to the North Star Vet team! She has been with us for a few weeks now, but will be on the road seeing calls starting this week. Dr. Amy grew up outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her interest in dairy cattle grew from working on her neighbor’s farm and involvement in 4-H. She attended Penn State University working in nutrition laboratories and at the dairy barns. Through competing on the Dairy Challenge team, she ga...ined an interest in production medicine and using data to improve farm profitability. Completing her veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Amy broadened her view of the dairy industry by completing externships in California, Wisconsin, New Zealand, and Idaho. Her primary interests are in transition cow health, nutrition, and data analysis. She is also excited to work with the wide variety of farm animals we see. Amy has been an awesome addition to the team so far. She’s thoughtful, dedicated, and takes on each day with a positive attitude. Additionally, she has really helped enable our office kitten collecting habit. Below are a few pictures of Amy on the job over the last few weeks (performing a displaced abomasum surgery, suturing a laceration on the face of one of our very favorite horse patients, giving some intravenous fluids to a cow in the field, and taking a scenic lunch break). Welcome Dr. Amy!!
Congratulations to our very own Dr. Jennifer Groetsch for completing her master in public health degree! On top of being an amazing vet on the road, she’s been been working hard to complete this degree from the University of Minnesota over the past couple years. This extra degree has helped Dr. Jennifer become an expert in how animal and human health are connected and how to help solve the complicated issues that arise with this intersect. We are lucky to have to her on our team! Congratulations Jen!
The CDC is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella in people in many states associated with backyard poultry, including New York. Make sure to wash your hands after handling poultry!
Not everyday you get to help bring FOUR lives into the world! Earlier this week, Dr. Jennifer assisted this goat mama with the delivery of four kids. The owner noticed that after giving birth to one kid on her own, the doe seemed to be having some trouble. From the size of her, he knew there must have been more, so he called us. The second one was coming breech (meaning backwards with both hind legs bent forward) which Dr. Jennifer was able to correct. After that, the last two kids were delivered quickly with just a little help! The doe and kids are doing well. Nice job Dr. Jennifer and mama goat!
Times are weird... but glad to have a lunch break together today! #nsvs #masksandsmiles
