In 1879, George Houghton wrote an article looking back at a mysterious incident that happened at the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, originally constructed of rubble stone in 1764. In 1863, while interior red brick was being added and the old wooden steps were being replaced with wrought iron, it is said that a cellar was discovered beneath the ground floor of the tower’s stone base. Houghton writes of an iron entry door found that was subsequently removed exposing a small room. In ...the room was a fireplace filled with ashes. He wrote "What this prison like chamber was intended for is by no means apparent." Nine years later, another writer named Gustave Kobbe visited the lighthouse and made a claim in an embellished story that a human skeleton was found sitting in a chair by a table in a cellar -- not in the tower but in the Keeper's House. Still, later writings by others would eventually bring the total skeleton count up to 15! Are these stories true? Who knows! Let's just share in the scary fun of somewhat spooky goings-on at the Hook since Halloween is this weekend! Fort Hancock and why the living quarters are built with yellow bricks. On October 30, 1895, the U.S. Army established Fort Hancock as a fortification where Soldiers would be trained to load and fire seacoast cannon to protect New York City shipping channels from attack by sea. Fort Hancock was named after Maj. Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-86), an officer and later politician best known for his leadership during the Civil War. The original purpose of the fort buildings w...as to accommodate a garrison of 400 Soldiers. In March 1896, Capt. Arthur Murray of the U.S. Artillery Corps was assigned to outline a plan of buildings for the artillery post. The idea was to create a comfortable post for Soldiers to live and work - a fort that would function with military precision, as well as a village to provide services and social support for making the isolated realities of military life more tolerable. By Fall 1896, the final number of buildings settled at 32 and construction quartermaster Capt. Carroll Devol chose to build them using buff colored brick rather than red brick. Although more costly, this yellow brick was much less porous than traditional red brick. The most impressive of the buildings are the 18 homes on Officers Row where Capt. Murray envisioned a style not lacking in beauty. In addition, four large barracks were built across the parade ground from the Officers’ Quarters with the most handsome and massive porches. And while on most military bases, buildings would normally face the parade ground, these structures were placed facing Sandy Hook Bay to take advantage of the scenic view. Join National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m. for Democracy & The Electoral College, the final in its three-part October series of Debate Defends Democracy discussing urgent issues through the prism of Federal Hall history. Moderator, John Avlon, CNN Senior Political Analyst, is joined by: Amel Ahmed, Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Wilfred Codrington, Brennan Center Fellow and Assistant Profes...sor of Law, Brooklyn Law School; and Jesse Wegman, The New York Times Columnist, to look at the Electoral College, its roots in the Constitution and its impact on the realities of our democracy that purports to suggest that every vote counts. Presented in partnership with the NYU Brennan Center for Justice, Federal Hall’s Sam Roberts and Brennan Center president, Michael Waldman, will introduce the program. The procedure to elect a president and vice president was established by the Constitution in Article II, which lays out the role of an Electoral College, which supersedes the popular vote. The nation’s first four elections were held under those rules. In 1804, after consecutive politically fraught presidential elections, Congress enacted the Twelfth Amendment clarifying the process, and these rules have governed all subsequent elections . Twice in this short century, the winner of the popular vote has not become president due to the Electoral College. In discussing the Electoral College, the panel will explore whose voices it elevates and whose it diminishes, and consider how likely it is that, in our politically-polarized nation, future presidential elections may be decided by the popular vote alone. #vote2020 #vote #history #ElectoralCollege
