Here are your faithful leaders in clear air and going fast. Note the name of the boat under the clew of the jib. All your hard work in the past few years allowed us to buy this for #hrcs. And yes we did win #nyarchregatta.
Are you besieged with requests for donations on Giving Tuesday? It's become a thing. But there are a lot of great organizations that really need your support. As friends of the Regatta, we know that one, or more, of the organizations that we support will resonate with you, so as you filter through all the Giving Tuesday pleas in your inbox, consider these as well https://www.riverkeeper.org/ https://www.brooklynboatworks.org/ https://rockingtheboat.org/... https://soundwaters.org/ https://hudsonsailing.org/ And - stay healthy, we want to see all of our friends back out on the water for the next regatta! Not sure the #NYarchregatta #architectsregatta ever had a finish this close.

Last year, the regatta raised over $200,000 for various charities, and our decision to cancel affected all of their budgets. To address that, at least a little, the NYARC board is participating in an event this weekend called Sailing for Scholars which supports one of the NYARCs long term charity partners. https://www.classy.org/fundraiser/2930470 Times are tough and we are all tightening our belts. But I believe that these are the times where we start sorting out what ...really matters. For many of us, that includes investing in our youth. This event supports a high school, and middle school program that uses sailing to teach life skills, leadership, and STEM education. There is no tuition for this program; it is funded entirely through funds raised in programs like the Sailing for Scholars Regatta. I recently asked the executive director of this program about the rationale behind their approach to leadership training. His reply - if you want to help someone learn to make decisions well, give them meaningful decisions to make. With that in mind, consider the combination of excitement and fear on this young ladies face: She is standing in a boat that she helped build it’s a very small boat, and she is about to push away from the dock and into the Hudson River. How well did she listen to her instructors? Will the boat hold together? Or will she get to swim the Hudson? Will she be able to sail it back to the docks? Leave aside the fabulous metaphors of a high school senior about to sail into a wide and very complex river. Her decisions over the previous months, and even more so her decisions over the upcoming hour, will make a real difference to the outcome of this trip. (In case you are wondering, she and her boat did great, and she is now a full time college student.) The opportunity for that kind of experience is what I am supporting. Kids growing up understanding science and technology is what we are supporting. Kids developing good decision making skills is what we are supporting. Kids growing up in the city having a chance to explore the world around them is what we are supporting.
