Making A Difference.... Philadelphia Police Department Officers George Soto annd Eddie Lopez have been serving the City of Brotherly Love for 28 years, so its n...o surprise these dedicated men in blue jumped at the chance to travel to Puerto Rico. Their mission, to lend a hand, and a hammer, to victims of Hurricane Maria, who are still reeling from the catstrophic storm. Both officers still have family in Puerto Rico, and it is simply in their DNA to help others. Officers Lopez and Soto joined a group of Latino firefighters from New Brunswick, New Jersey, traveling to the island on April 20th. The purpose of their trip was to rebuild homes and restore hope, and they were successful on both fronts. They told me one of the most memorable moments was when it started raining, just after they had finished putting a roof on a woman's house. She was so excited, she was screaming with joy. For the first time in months, she finally had a real roof over her head to stay dry. These miracle workers rebuilt six homes in six days, working in grueling conditions and 14 hours shifts. Of course they say they'd do it all again, just to see the look on these Hurricane victim's faces as they try to reclaim their lives. Here is the story that aired on FOX 29 News. If you would like to make a donation to help these officers on future trips to Puerto Rico, check out these two Facebook pages: Eddie Salea Lopez Sr. & Puerto Rican Action Board.

On two separate occasions in his extraordinary career he was honored for his bravery, including the rescue of an unconscious woman trapped in a bedroom of a hi...gh-rise apartment fire. And when he wasn’t serving our city, protecting life and property and removing New Yorkers from harm, he traded in his bunker gear and helmet for the uniform of the United States Marine Corps. Here is an individual who excelled in not one, but two elite institutions the type of American we can all be proud of. Chris was a protector of those in danger, a defender to those who needed him, a rescuer to those who needed saving, and a leader who demonstrated his valor on every tour of duty, both here and abroad, said FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro at today’s funeral service for U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sergeant and FDNY Firefighter Christopher Slutman, who died on Monday, April 8, as a result of injuries sustained while on active duty in Afghanistan.
