Please join us this Thursday at 7:00 PM EST for an online lecture/demonstration with luthier Gary Lee. Gary will explore the techniques, concepts and thought processes that likely went into the building of your guitar. You’ll see video and listen to commentary recorded by Gary in his workshop. In the second half of the session, you’ll have ample time to ask the questions you’ve always wanted to ask a luthier. Info on how to join the meeting is at http://nyccgs.com. For a prev...iew of the presentation, watch the trailer below. https://youtu.be/vu3gUyMHD9k

A few months ago, the New York guitar world lost one of its dearest souls, Don Witter Jr., after a long illness. His wife, Heidi, has informed me that next wee...kend, she is giving away Don's books, bookcases, and extensive collection of sheet music and CDs for FREE. If interested, please bring bags or boxes next Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23 from 12-4 pm, to 950 E. 14th St., #5P, Brooklyn, NY 11230. A lovely opportunity for all who are nearby and interested. See more

Together with the rest of the guitar world, we mourn the loss this week of Frank Wallace, who gave us so much over the years with his extraordinary collection of compositions and his beautiful performances. Our own Second Sundays Classical Guitar Concert Series was launched by Frank, and we co-curated it with him for the five seasons that it ran. He reached people throughout the world with his music and his warm and generous spirit, and he influenced the guitar community everywhere, not least of all in New York City. Our hearts go out to Frank's wife Nancy and their sons, and hope that his enduring legacy can serve as a comfort for all of us who knew him.

We at the Guitar Foundation of America are grieving. We are heartbroken by the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many others who cam...e before them; we are devastated by the wide-ranging and ongoing injustices born from systemic racism that still persists in the United States of America. We condemn racism and the treatment of any human being as less than equal. We recognize the inequities that exist in the classical music world, and in the guitar world specifically. We remember that the guitar itself came to the Americas through the hands of conquistadors, that there is a story in our very instrument which seeks redemption and renewal through performances by people of every color, race, gender, religion, and socioeconomic background. At a time when we feel frustrated and helpless, what can we do as individuals, what can we do as an organization? We can speak when we witness injustice, implicit bias, or microaggressions. We can work harder to address equity of all kinds in the events that we produce. We can find ways to increase support for people doing great work around equity in arts education at the local level. We can listen to and work with our community to improve our effectiveness at all of the above. And we can learn to do all of this with great empathy and care for one another, allowing our earnestly rising tide to lift all of our boats. This is a moment in which we turn to the guitar to express all the things that we cannot say with words - to express the gravity of injustice in this nation, and to hold for us the emotions that accompany tragedy and devastation, allowing our hearts to heal as we work towards a better world, in solidarity with one another. #TheShowMustBePaused
