Meet the Stars of Yiddish Broadway! Join us on Wednesday, May 19, 5 pm, at the southeast corner of Second Avenue and East 10th Street to meet the remaining Stars of Yiddish Theatre (rain date, Thursday, May 20, 5pm). Second Avenue Deli owner Abe Lebewohl decided to celebrate Yiddish Theatre’s leading figures by creating granite stars and placing them in the sidewalk outside of the Deli. Enjoy hearing the stories of the playwrights, impresarios, and actors who played in the th...eaters that dotted Second Avenue, known as the Yiddishe Rialto. Learn about the Second Avenue buildings they played in and how these buildings remain tied to the performing arts. Paper and crayons will be provided so that you can rub the stars the right way!

"Elizabeth and Hester were two daughters of the Bayard family before they gave their names to intersecting avenues. Staunchly loyal to the British monarchy, they were run out of town after the Revolutionary."

Don't miss LESJC in the The New York Times! Our very own director of operations, Lori Weissman, is quoted, alongside a beautiful shot of historic Bialystoker Synagogue! "At the turn of the last century, there were more than 500 synagogues in what Lori Weissman, the director of operations for the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy, calls America’s most famous immigrant neighborhood, which then stretched to 14th Street. A particularly beautiful one is the still-active Bialystoker Synagogue on Willett Street. The landmark 1826 building, converted to a synagogue in 1905, features a soaring interior with stained-glass windows, hand-painted murals and a ceiling adorned with signs of the zodiac.

The iconic Jewish Daily Forward building at 175 East Broadway designated a city landmark in 1983 once boasted rooftop lighting that may have rivaled those of the Atlantic City boardwalk. Designed by architect George Boehm, and completed in 1912, the ten-story beaux arts beauty previously housed the offices and presses for the Yiddish daily newspaper.
