An estimated 750,000 New Yorkers are living in food deserts low-income areas that lack access to large supermarkets and affordable, healthy food. Food deserts primarily plague BIack and Hispanic neighborhoods, increasing health problems for those populations of at-risk communities. At New York Common Pantry, we address the effects of food deserts by supplying healthy, nutritious food to our participants. We’ve even started a Mobile Pantry program to increase our reach! A groundbreaking new way to fight food waste has presented itself in the form of Too Good To Go, an app that connects consumers with surplus food from local eateries and grocery stores. Too Good To Go allows for a mutually beneficial arrangement where food service industries are able to avoid throwing away good food, and consumers are able to find food at a lower and more affordable price. Too Good To Go is currently accessible right here in NYC, with the goal of launching throughout North America in the near future.
