NYC Tartan Week 03.11.2020

THE NATIONAL TARTAN DAY NEW YORK COMMITTEE IS VERY EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THAT REGISTRATION WILL OPEN ON OCTOBER 1st, 2020 at 12:00pm FOR THE 23rd ANNUAL NEW YORK CITY TARTAN DAY PARADE TO BE HELD ON APRIL 10, 2021! COVID 19 announcement: We know that we are being optimistic thinking that the Parade will take place as planned, and that we will be able to put 2020 behind us. We will be taking every precaution possible as outlined by the CDC, and the NY State Government guidelines.... We will continue to stay up to date on all regulations and keep you all informed with all the latest updates. So, make a plan, (don’t you feel better already?) to come and join us to march up Sixth Avenue in New York City. Wear your kilt, listen to the skirl of the bagpipes, and to the cheers tens of thousands of spectators. We admit bias when we say it is the most fun Parade in New York City, and we sorely missed it in 2020. So, join us in 2021 for pipe bands from across the globe, dancers, clans, dogs, politicians, Scottish cultural organizations, plus of COURSE, the Loch Ness Monster, in a joyous New York City celebration of Scottish pride. Let’s get back to doing what we love to do; celebrate all things Scottish! Groups and individuals are invited to march in the 23rd Annual New York City Tartan Day Parade on Saturday, April 10, 2021 by registering at nyctartanweek.org. There’s absolutely no charge to march in or attend the parade. We can’t wait to see you, absence has well any truly made our Celtic hearts grow fonder!

Today’s memorial at Ground Zero might look a little different but the catastrophic impact from the events of 9/11 had around the world remains the same. At 8.46am shivers will run down the spines of everyone who remembers and those who were affected by the attacks that brought everyone to a standstill and changed our lives forever. Today is a day to honour the brave and remember the innocent.

‘Dare to be honest and fear no labor,’ Robert Burns, 1789. For over 125 years the first Monday in September is a day to celebrate and recognise the contributions and achievements of American workers. As a nation built on immigration and multiple cultures there has been a plethora of Scottish influences that have helped create the country we know today. One of the key players that helped drive through the Labor revolution was Andrew Carr Cameron (1834-1890). Originally from Be...rwick-Upon-Tweed, he played an integral role as the editor of the Workingman's Advocate and as an opinion maker, he was considered one of the greatest labor voices and leaders of his time. Though this year the meaning of this day may have shifted from celebration to perhaps thankfulness to be gainfully employed or empathy for those that have themselves or know loved ones that have lost their jobs, we will also be eternally grateful for years of hard fought battles that have resulted in many of the most basic benefits we take for granted today.
