Many times patients will come to me saying they have a cavity and point to a black spot on their tooth. Black spots aren't always cavities. In fact they usually are not! Dental decay can range in color from white, yellow/tooth colored, to dark brown/black. Consistency of the discoloration is more important in the diagnosis of dental decay as soft tooth structure is decay, while hard tooth is good even if black in color. In general, the darker black something is on the tooth t...he less likely it is to be true decay (but this isn't always the case). Some definitions/descriptions... Caries: Tooth decay Affected Dentin: Tooth that is not Infected but rather is solid tooth structure with a very low bacterial count, so low that it has been shown it does not need to be removed and can be left and restored (filled) without every progressing. Erosion: Dental wear due to environmental/extrinsic factors such as acidic drinks and foods. Intrinsic factors (not in this picture) can also cause dental erosion, such as Acid Reflux (GERD) and Bullemia. Staining: Staining can occur do to many factors. Before shows ill fitting upper and lower dentures with poor aesthetics and poor bite. Patient also stated that lower denture difficult to use and wear as it isn't stable. After picture shows new upper and lower dentures with lower now supported by 2 implants giving denture greater stability. Patient requested not to have white teeth but rather was happy with the shade of his old lower denture and requested to have that shade matched. Larger upper and lower teeth were used to ...fill in the face and create a fuller and more aesthetically pleasing smile.
