When NYC was hit by the 90's AIDS epidemic, our community was incredibly lucky to have a number of compassionate individuals that were determined to do whatever it takes to save lives. Dr. Joyce Wallace was one of these unsung heroes. An internist that was among the first researchers to study HIV, Dr. Wallace also tirelessly worked directly in the frontlines: whether she was driving around the city offering HIV tests and condoms, running a syringe exchange program, or opening her home to those who had nowhere else to go. Dr. Wallace dedicated her time and resources to helping sex workers, particularly those that were homeless and/or using drugs, in a time when stigma was at its very worst. We will forever admire her kindness, tenacity, and ingenuity. Rest in Power, Dr. Joyce Wallace.

This week is National Addiction Treatment Week! Did you know that less than half of US counties have a provider that can prescribe opioid addiction treatment meds? This is largely because providers need to apply for a federal waiver in order to prescribe them. We need to make this process easier to increase access to treatment!

Regardless if it's the US or Japan, extreme drug use-related stigma can prevent people from seeking help. We need to end stigma and instead treat people with compassion
