SHSP Dean's Distinguished Leaders Lecture Series Features NYMC Flu Vaccine Expert The School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) hosted a special lecture via a Zoom presentation on October 28 as part of its Dean's Distinguished Leaders Lecture Series. Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A., dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president for government affairs, welcomed guest speaker, Doris J. Bucher, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and immunology,... who presented "Influenza in the Time of COVID-19." Dr. Bucher, who has dedicated most of her research career to work on influenza viruses and influenza vaccine development, explained the similarities and differences between the influenza virus and the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. She also shared the history of her laboratory that is one of three laboratories worldwide which produce high growth reassortant 'seed' viruses for the influenza vaccine, ultimately used to produce 400 to 500 million doses of flu vaccine annually. Monica M. is a third-year M.P.H. student aspiring to work in the disaster management sector alongside the CDC, WHO and FEMA, to help manage national crises like... COVID-19. When not in the classroom, she is an active rugby player! During her second week of classes, Monica tore her ACL, MCL, and PCL, after a teammate was tackled into her in a match. Although it was a difficult time for her, her professors were understanding and supportive throughout the healing process. Her advice for the NYMC community: Take a deep breath. Don’t be set on one thing. Be flexible for when life gets in the way. // #NYMCambassador post from Brittany M., #NYMC Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS) // #NYMCSHSP #NYMCMPH #NYMCPH #publichealth #gradschool #college
