These days the F word means FIBER. Fiber is a non-digestible, zero-cal carbohydrate that’s naturally found in plant foods like fruits , veggies , beans, nuts , as well as whole grains . So why all the buzz ? Well, studies show a high fiber diet (25+ g/day) can help with weight loss and reduce calorie consumption. While most people are roped in with that fun fact alone let’s not overlook the most important benefits of a higher fiber diet - it can also help fight again...st chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers. Now we can’t attribute all of this to just fiber alone...that would be a lot of pressure (no pun intended) on just 1 single nutrient. A high fiber diet usually means you’re eating more antioxidants, anti-inflammatory foods, and lower amounts of refined flour/sugar and saturated fats. @american_heart recommends adults get anywhere from 25-30g per day, and claims most people only take in about half of that. Thus, fiber has become an increasingly hot topic. But can you have too much??? While it’s rare and unlikely, considering fiber itself does not have toxicity levels, it is possible to have TOO much of this good thing. At worst, and more rarely , Over eating the recommended amounts can interfere with absorbing other important nutrients like A, D, E, K and iron. It can also cause severe GI issues that may need medical attention. However more typical, common, and less serious side effects are just extremely uncomfortable digestion issues like bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhea. Sorry but nutrition counseling is not a ONE-AND-DONE kind of service. It’s takes Registered Dietitians YEARS of extensive training to earn their title. How can you expect us to condense all of that in just 1 consultation? Not only is it a disservice to you, our clients, to try and help you with just 1 consultation, but it’s unfair to us as well. Further, an effective meal plan is one that is constantly evolving and improving with time.
