October 25, 1881: Pablo Picasso was born to give life a new look. A painter, sculptor, ceramics maker, printmaker and author, Picasso’s Les femmes d'Alger (Version 'O') auctioned for $179 million at Christie’s in 2015. In May 2018, Picasso’s painting Fillette à la corbeille fleurie, 1905, brought a very respectable $115 million at Christie’s.

October 22, 1938: Christopher Lloyd was born and became Doc Brown in the Back to the Future movies. In 2011, Profiles in History sold the time-traveling DeLorean used in the third movie for $541,200. In all, seven DeLoreans were made for the movies; three remain in this timeline.

October 21, 1956: Carrie Fisher, the daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher, was born. She will always be remembered as Princess Leia, and her Slave Leia costume worn in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi will not be forgotten. It brought $96,000 at Profiles in History in 2015. Leia’s little protector R2D2 stood very tall at Profiles in History in 2017 when it rolled to $2.76 million, the most paid for a Star Wars collectible. It was used in the first three films (cnbc.com, 6/29/17).

October 20, 1931: Baseball great Mickey Mantle was born. A 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 cared rated PSA 9 homered for $2.88 million in April 2018 at Heritage Auctions. His 1964 home run record-setting game-worn New York Yankees jersey rated MEARS A9 made $1.32 million at Heritage Auctions in August 2018. The jersey was photo matched to Games 6 and 7 when he hit home runs 17 and 18.

October 19, 2014: Ian McKellen’s Gandalf The White screen-used hero Wizard’s Staff from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy conjured up $390,000 at Profiles in History. Besting Gandalf’s staff was Aragon’s Andúril, the Sword That Was Reforged; it was a cut above at $437,000 at Bonham’s in 2014 (screenrant.com, 7/20/2020). Third place goes to Orlando Bloom’sI mean Legolas Greenleaf the Elf’s6-foot bow that shot up to $310,000 at Profiles in History in 2012 (justcollecting.com).

October 14, 1926: Winnie-the-Pooh was published, A.A. Milne’s story about a boy named Christopher Robin, just like his son. The original drawing of the Hundred Acre Wood map by E.H. Shepard auctioned for an incredible $568,761 at Sotheby’s in 2018, the highest auction price paid to date for a book illustration (news.artnet.com, 7/10/2018). In 2014, a drawing by E.H. Shepard used in the second Pooh book, The House At Pooh Corner, went for 314,500 at Sotheby’s (bbc.com, 12/...9/14). It shows Christopher Robin and Pooh looking through a fence and is titled, For a long time they looked at the river beneath them. We are teribly sorry that we shant be able to come to your party on March 30th but we are going to be away. Thank you so much for inviteing us, wrote E.H. Shepard (with the misspellings) as Winnie the Pooh to the son of a friend who’d invited the bear to his birthday party. The note and a drawing with Pooh and Piglet brought 12,500 at Dominic Winters Auctioneers in England in June 2020 (bbc.com 6/25/2020). Shephard passed away in 1976. See more

October 12, 1492: Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas. In 2015, a letter he wrote from Spain to his son Diego dated 29 April 1498 and valued at 15 million, was barred by a judge from leaving Spain to be auctioned (theguardian.co.uk, 3/11/2015). A book by Christopher Columbus titled, De Insulis nuper in mari Indico repertis (The islands have recently been discovered in the Indian Sea), also known as the Columbus Letter, sailed to $751,500 in 2017 at Bonham’s (newsatlas.com, 9/26/17). Written during his first voyage home, only 80 copies of the book are still in existence despite 17 editions being published. This particular copy is known as the Basel edition because it was published in Switzerland; only four copies of this edition exist.

October 11, 2011: Actor Richard Gere’s 107-lot collection of guitars hit the high note of $936,438 at Christie’s. At the top was a 1960 Gibson Les Paul that realized $98,500.

October 10, 1985: Orson Welles passed away. He directed, starred in and co-wrote Citizen Kane (1941) for which he won an Oscar for Original Screenplay. In 2011, that Oscar sold for $861,542 at Nate D. Sanders Auctions.

October 9, 1888: The Washington Monument opened to the public. It cost about $2.6 million to build. In 1908, a baseball was dropped from the top of the Washington Monument thirteen times before Gabby Street, catcher for the Washington Senators, could glove it. Street said the catch sounded like a rifle shot, and the force numbed his hand. It sold for $6,572 at Heritage Auctions in 2009.
