VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP OPPORTUNITY! Wool: Farm to Yarn Thursday, April 22, 2021, 10am and 12:30pm 40 minutes in duration... Visit Orchard View Farm in Bergen, NY and Battenkill Fibers in Greenwich, NY. Orchard View Farm began in 2002 with two sheep and has grown to as many as 50 ewes, depending on the time of year. Battenkill Fibers Carding & Spinning Mill was founded in 2009 and the mill produces 100-150lbs of artisan quality natural-colored and dyed semi-worsted yarn daily using refurbished traditional milling machinery. During this virtual field trip, youth will see a sheep farm in action watching lambs be fed, see sheep in their pasture, and learn about shearing. They will then witness how the raw wool is processed into yarn at the mill. Youth will have the opportunity to ask questions live to the farmer and mill owner. From Our Program Director... Dear New York State 4-H Community, I watched the events unfolding at the U.S. Capitol last week with a combination of shock, anger, and great sadness. I found myself also wondering what our young people must be thinking when they try and process what was unfolding, on top of the existing challenges and strife of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the days have passed and we begin to see our leaders reckoning with these events and moving forward towards a...ccountability and healing, I encourage all us to embrace the importance of our 4-H program, and our opportunity to help our youth achieve a positive vision of the future for themselves and their communities. As our National 4-H Council CEO Jennifer Sirangelo has shared in her message this week: The events were also a clear reminder of the importance of our 4-H positive youth development mission. Cooperative Extension’s thousands of 4-H programs, projects, curriculum, and events focused on civil discourse, citizenship, equity, leadership, community service, and social justice teach 4-H youth from different backgrounds and beliefs in every county in America to respect and value one another. Over 500,000 dedicated staff and trained volunteers guide 4-H youth through hands-on experiences in how to work together with adults, with elected officials, and through civic and government institutions to solve problems and improve their communities. Our young people need this important 4-H civic training and support now more than ever. I encourage all of us to support each other during these challenging times and create the spaces we need for personal reflection, healing, and maintaining a positive vision of the future. If we take the time to care for ourselves and one another we will have the courage, strength, and conviction we need to create spaces for our young people to grow and thrive and imagine a future for themselves, their families, communities, and nation that is based on the principle of honesty, justice, and equity. I know all of us at the State 4-H Office feel honored to be doing this work with all of you Andy Turner NYS 4-H Program Leader
