Purchase and use only child-resistant lighters. Lighters that look like toys can confuse children and cause fires, injuries, and death and are prohibited in most states. Do not buy or use them. #FirePrevention #FireSafetyTips #BeSafe #KidsFireSafety

Extension cords should be a short term solution. Rearrange appliances or have an electrician install an extra outlet. Remember, don’t use an extension cord with any heat producing appliances, like space heaters.

Large amounts of Snow around your home could lead to serious CO poisoning ... be sure to clear around all vents. Owego, NY - WARNING! The State Academy of Fire Science recently added a unique new training unit to help educate firefighters and HazMat responders on how to stop leaks, assess dama...ge and safely transfer products from typical types of intermodal containers during an incident. This training unit encompasses both low and high pressure tanks typically encountered on highways, railroad lines and ships across the state. These tanks haul many different types of hazardous materials. For example, low pressure tanks handle liquids like acids (hydrochloric acid), bases (sodium hydroxide) and flammables (alcohols). High pressure tanks can contain various gases, like natural gas or propane. This training unit will allow trainees to safely work on the tank and go inside the tank to see how various fittings operate. The Academy’s Hazmat Technician, and Cargo Truck Hazmat Specialist courses will utilize this new training unit. View the Academy’s 2021 training calendar at https://on.ny.gov/3g1mQDV

State Fire reminds New Yorkers about the importance of keeping a natural tree properly hydrated since trees can rapidly dry out, increasing the risk of fire. Al...ways keep the tree stand secure and filled with water. Do not place a tree near a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. Do not put a live tree up too early or leave it up for too long. Remember to have working smoke alarms. #firepreventionfriday See more

During the month of October Firefighters always stress the importance of having two means of egress from your home in case of a fire. This follows suit to the Winter months. Everyone shovels the snow away from their primary egress point, but fail to remember if there is a fire or an emergency; you don't want to be blocked in your home by a wall of snow at another exit. Please remember to shovel out any back/side/front doors that snow may be blocking. This also gives Firefighters and EMS personnel another means of getting you out of your home when there is a Fire and/or Medical emergency.
