New York Sea Grant Hudson Estuary 29.06.2021

High tide flooding . Today is the full moon, a time when we can expect some of the highest tides, aka spring tides. Spring tides occur each month close to when the moon is new or full due to its position in relation to the earth and sun. . Here on the Atlantic coast we experience two high tides and two low tides in a day, roughly 6 hours apart. Wind speed and direction are other factors that can affect the timing and strength of the tidal currents. ... . The photo above was taken at high tide today. The water is not overtopping the banks of the shoreline, but rather it’s coming from storm sewer outfalls that get flooded and back up on to the streets. . High tide flooding is not new, but it will happen more frequently as sea level rises. What may seem like minor inconveniences now will eventually cost our shoreline residents and communities over time from damage to infrastructure, stranded assets, and the stress that comes with losing what you love. . Where else are you seeing high tide flooding around the estuary? . Happy full moon y’all #tides #estuary #moonphase #floods #erosion #ebb #flow #resilience #retreat #fortify #risk . . .
