In recent months there has been a dynamic explosion of online resources dedicated to material specification as the industry moves away from physical product specification binders. This is especially helpful during these challenging times, as physical materials libraries are still temporarily closed. To help the NYSID community, we have subscribed to several new online material databases. Our new Material Resources & Research guide puts all our information about our physical... material collections and these new material databases in one place! With these online resources, students can find current specification and manufacturer contact info, create material boards, and upload their own visual content (floor plans, etc.) with easy integration with industry software, e.g., CAD and Revit. The guide is available on our Library’s homepage under Research Guides, and can be found directly at https://libguides.nysid.edu/materialresources.

Welcome back for the Summer Session! Though the physical Library remains closed, the NYSID Library Team wants to emphasize that we are still here to help virtually! We’ve implemented a live chat service, meaning that during the virtual hours posted on the Library's homepage, clicking the Chat Now! button on the Library’s homepage will connect you directly to a library team member who will assist you. You can always submit your question to us by clicking on the email links on the library website as well. We’re excited to chat with you!

Despite having to work remotely from the physical materials, NYSID’’s archivist/librarian Julie Sandy is still preparing a finding aid for one of our newest collections, the Emily Malino Collection, with a plan to make it accessible to students and researchers via our ArchivesSpace catalog by the fall. Malino was an exuberant, talented and prolific designer in the mid-to-late 20th century. Over the course of her career, she founded her own firm, Emily Malino Associates; wa...s a vice-president at Perkins and Will; designed contract interiors for hospitals, offices and universities; consulted and lectured across the country for Sears Roebuck & Co. and other corporations (and contributed to a do-it-yourself series Sears published called How to Decorate your Home); wrote a weekly syndicated newspaper column called Design for People for 15 years that appeared in the Washington Post among other papers, and authored a book in 1976 called Super Living Rooms. She was also the wife of U.S. Congressman James Scheuer (see photo), and raised four children, presumably in her spare time?! This exciting, large new collection is chock full of ideas and design inspirationalready this spring semester, Julie has been working with a NYSID student doing an independent study about Malino’s designs for hospitals, looking at how she used color and incorporated residential elements into institutional settings. Watch this space for the announcement about the finding aid launch in the near future! #nysid #nysidlibrary #archives
