#Announcement: Influential Standardbred breeder Steve Jones has been appointed a Trustee of the Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund. Jones was nominated by the majority leader of the New York State Senate and appointed by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to serve. The Fund administers the New York Sire Stakes program at pari-mutuel tracks and county fairs across the state and supports the Harry M. Zweig Memorial Fund for Equine Research at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

2020 County Fair Driver of the Year, Leon Bailey, is looking back on this successful year. The 34-year-old from upstate New York recently won his first driving title at Vernon Downs an emotional accomplishment he dedicated to his late father Bill took top driving honors on the New York County Fair circuit and won his first races at The Meadowlands. For the year, he has won 96 of 524 starts and $288,971 in purses all career highs. I’ve always wanted to be leading driver (at Vernon) so I wanted to do whatever I could do to get to that point or get closer to that point. It all falls into that experience category. It’s kind of hard to come up with a plan for it, you just have to take what you get and hope you do well with it."

#Important Breeders are reminded to submit Form B to complete mare residency in 2020 if you have not already done so. Establishing residency for a broodmare ensures that the breeder will be eligible for Breeders Awards when the resulting foal races in the NYSS program. Residency is 180 days inside New York, including conception. Breeders must submit the form within 30 days of the mare leaving the state. You may also do so at the end of the year or any time after the 180-da...y period is reached for mares that do not leave the state. For example, mares in New York through the end of the year must return the form no later than Jan. 30, 2021, but if you have established the 180-day period you may submit the form now. Postdated forms will not be accepted. See the complete rules attached. Statement from the Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund Regarding the 2021 New York Sire Stakes Program: As the yearling auction sales season gets underway in Lexington next week, the Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund, which sponsors the New York Sire Stakes program, assures breeders and buyers that we are fully preparing for a solid stakes season in 2021. The purse account that has been accumulating since July is now g...rowing more quickly as the casinos at the seven racetracks in the state have resumed operations. While the COVID-19 shutdown impacted purses in 2020, the New York Sire Stakes still distributed more than $10.2 million. We plan to use the 2020 program as a starting point for the program in 2021, and we will make adjustments as needed depending on the money that is available. We are optimistic that purses will be near 2020 levels, barring another unforeseen circumstance. We wish good luck to all bidders in the coming days and weeks as they seek out their next New York Sire Stakes headliner.
