Priya Parrotta stands at the crossroads of music, writing, and environmental activism. On Tuesday, Feb. 23, we have the chance to learn how she incorporates music in environmental education to address environmental justice in her work through an empathetic lens. This webinar is part of a larger question. Who, what and how we are teaching about our sites? Are we teaching the inclusive, accurate, and honest history of racial, social, and environmental conflict in our r...egion? Are we including the stories of BIPOC in educational programs and materials? It is important to not shy away from difficult topics, but rather present them with empathy for those affected. Attendance is limited. We ask that non-NYSOEA members donate $10 to our Equity, Access, and Inclusion Committee to attend. Registration here: https://bit.ly/3pL4r2t. Our Equity, Access, and Inclusion Committee regularly assembles the most qualified speakers and panels to further the most relevant conversations for the cultural future of the outdoor education field in New York State. Please email any questions to the EAI Committee at [email protected]. : NYSOEA’s Equity, Access, and Inclusion Committee

Our 2020 conference is titled ‘The Climate of Outdoor Education’ (registration link here: https://bit.ly/2JbUKK0). We don’t just mean physical climate. Outdoor education programs are sometimes a young person’s first opportunity to truly participate in ‘grownup’ conversations about the history of the land they stand on. At our virtual conference from Nov. 5 to Nov. 8, some discussions and workshops will focus on how our outdoor ed organizations and our... program leaders can be more aware of the strong messages our communities will read in the stories we tell and the stories we leave out. Our outstanding Equity, Access, and Inclusion Committee organized a conference panel called ‘Making Our Programs Inclusive: What does inclusion really look like?’ for Nov. 7 from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. At the panel, experienced outdoor educators will speak and answer questions on how they are adapting their organizations and programs to advancing public attitudes about historical storytelling. If you are facing financial hardship but would greatly benefit from attending this year's conference, you can apply for the George Fuge Scholarship to cover your registration costs. The scholarship application and much more can be found on our conference page at nysoea.org/conference. : Drew Hays
