NYS TESOL 07.12.2020

NYS TESOL community, as we commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., NYS TESOL would like to introduce and share an important message from our VP of Advocacy JPB Gerald: Hello NYS TESOL members. I'm an adult educator and a doctoral student whose research focuses on the intersection of racism, whiteness, and language teaching. As part of my role as VP of Advocacy, I am hoping to develop a SubCommittee on AntiRacism in TESOL (SCAR, because people like acrony...ms and now you'll remember it). While I'm sure many of you understand the importance of antiracism in society and in education overall, this is deeply intertwined with the practice, policy, and pedagogy of language teaching, and several other state TESOL organizations are engaging in this vital work. Accordingly, New York needs to be on the forefront, and that's what I intend to ensure. This group would discuss related articles and books. create webinars (and eventually presentations in person), distribute materials and content, and connect with antiracism committees in other state TESOL organizations. Although I am the VP of Advocacy, you need not be a member of the advocacy committee to engage in this work! The only requirement is that you are willing to think deeply about how to dismantle the system of racism and its impact on language teaching. If this interests you, please contact me at [email protected]. If you want to read my work on the subject to know where I'm coming from, you can go to my website at jpbgerald.com or listen to my podcast about language teaching, racism, and whiteness at https://anchor.fm/unstandardized . I hope to hear from you soon! JPB Please take the time to view Mr. Gerald’s message on how his work as Vice President of Advocacy for NYS TESOL will direct our organization and lead to positive work in changing practice, policy, and pedagogy of language teaching. https://flipgrid.com/s/C7e3AiB13eLyBQEx United we are stronger and can bring about a positive change! #NYSTESOL invites ALL to join our Vice President, Advocacy JPB Gerald in this important work!! #EAL, #ELL, #ESL, #Multilingual, #TESOL #ENL #nyseducators #educator
