MEET THE COMPOSER Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany in 1685. After being orphaned at age 10, he lived with his older brother Johann Christoph and began studying the organ and the klavier. He was a highly prolific composer and served as Kapelle of the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, as Kapellmeister at the court of Anhalt-Cöthen, and as Cantor at St. Thomas's in Leipzig, a position he held until his death in 1750. Though well regarded as an organist, his compositions fell largely out of favor, until a revival began with the performance of his St. Matthew Passion, conducted by Felix Mendelssohn in 1829. Richard Alston’s Distance, set to music by J.S. Bach, is featured on both Program A and B. LIFT LAB LIVE continues through November 14. Link in bio or www.nytb.org for more info.

The new rules of performance not only let the outside in but also enhanced the program, which began with Jean Volpe’s Speranza for Mónica Lima, whose filigree footwork filled the stage with a loveliness that matched her gentle look. Head to toe in pink including her mask she could have stepped out of a jewelry box. -The New York Times LIFT LAB LIVE continues through November 14. More info in the link in our bio! MEET THE COMPOSER Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in London in 1875. As a child he studied the violin, but quickly brought his focus to composition after being accepted into the Royal College of Music at age 15. His works would later be championed by Edward Elgar, leading to three tours to the United States, during one of which he was received at the White House by Theodore Roosevelt in 1904. These tours also brought to Coleridge-Taylor a curiosity about his heritage, partic...ularly that of his father's ancestors who had fought alongside the British during the American Revolution in exchange for their freedom from slavery and safe passage to England. He sought to incorporate African folk melodies into his music, in his words the same as what Brahms has done for Hungarian music, Dvorak for the Bohemian, and Grieg for the Norwegian." Coleridge-Taylor died in 1912 in Croydon at the age of 37. Jean Volpe's new ballet on Program A uses the 4th movement from Coleridge-Taylor's Forest Scenes op. 66 for solo piano, composed in 1907. LIFT LAB LIVE continues through November 14 at NYTB. More info in the link in our bio!
