NYU CSC (Commuter Student Council) 06.07.2021

To the members of the NYU Commuter Community: The Commuter Student Council (CSC) is aware of the current violence and degree of hate crimes being committed towards the Asian community within and outside of New York. CSC stands in solidarity with the Asian community during these challenging times and the fight against racism and discrimination. Anti-Asian attitudes have existed for a long time, yet the pandemic has led to an alarming increase in Asian hate crimes towards vuln...erable elders and other members of the Asian population. Part of this rise is due to rhetoric against Asian Americans and misinformation about COVID-19. Our community is suffering, and many of our university populace are suffering. Being the most diverse institution across the country, Asian students are proudly one of the largest undergraduate and graduate populations across the university. As the representative of all NYU commuters and off-campus students, CSC strives to build a community, inclusive of each and every individual, to develop one united commuter pride. This means we denounce any acts of racism and have no tolerance for the oppression against any individual based on their race, gender, sexuality, religion, or any identity that is held. We are here for you. In these challenging times, we implore you to take care of yourselves, your friends and loved ones. Please support Asian-owned small businesses, especially as many are struggling due to the pandemic and anti-Asian beliefs. Support Asian elders in your community and correct those who use misinformation about COVID-19, if it is safe for you to do so. We must stand against hate and protect the individuals, families, and businesses in our communities and in the larger NYU populace. We are tired of being invisible, of being mistaken for our colleague or told our struggles aren’t as real - NBA veteran Jeremy Lin. If you need to speak about these events or would like more information about how you can help, please refer to the list of resources. CSC serves as a resource and advocate for our students, and we welcome any feedback on how we can better serve our community. The time to act and support is now, so let’s act and ensure that all voices are being heard and protected within and beyond NYU. In solidarity, The CSC Executive Board
