The space’s designer, Mimi Lien, says she was inspired by the work of Professor Eric Klinenberg, whose book, Palaces for the People, proposes how social infrastructurefrom public libraries to churches, parks and other shared spacescan strengthen civic life.
The idea was that food waste is this incredibly poignant symbol of a failure of capitalism. There’s all this labor and animal suffering and exploitation that goes into these commodities, Prof. Alex Barnard said. But what an amazing additional tragedy: that all of that suffering happens for something that isn’t even consumed.

Congratulations to Prof. Siwei Cheng on her promotion to Associate Professor with tenure! She has been a prolific scholar and an excellent teacher. We are very lucky to have her in our department.
In a May 25 keynote on the opening day of the U.S. Book Show, Prof. Eric Klinenberg thanked librarians for their work and stressed that as the nation seeks to recover from a tumultuous year, we will need our public libraries now more than ever before.
Congratulations to Prof. Jacob Faber, who has been named a co-winner of the Study of Social Problems 2021 Michael Harrington Award! For his academic scholarship on segregation and its lasting legacy and engagement with policy makers and legislators to ameliorate some of its deleterious effects, the committee felt that Prof. Faber was deserving of this award. #NYU #Sociology #Policy #Award
Congrats to Malcolm Araos (NYU Sociology PhD candidate), whose article, "Democracy Underwater: Public Participation and Technical Expertise in Climate Infrastructure Planning in New York City" is co-winner of the 2021 Olsen Student Paper Award from the American Sociological Association Section on Environmental Sociology.
"Infrastructure, at its most fundamental level, is not about roads and bridges, cable and concrete. It’s about what who are, what we value and what kind of society we want to create. If it’s a once in a generation project, it’s essential that we get it right."- Prof. Eric Klinenberg
