Happy Friday! As we enter the weekend we want to remind everyone that cases of COVID-19 are on the rise in our area. As we have been throughout the pandemic our first concern is the health and safety of our clients. We are disinfecting, washing our hands, wearing our masks and practicing physical distancing. We ask that you support us in these efforts by wearing masks and following the six foot physical distancing guidelines. If you have any concerns about your health or infection status please let us know and we will arrange a safe way to see and care for your horses. By working together we will get through this and be able to continue to enjoy our horses.

Due to the impending storm we are asking our clients to please call today if you intend to reschedule an appointment. As well, the office won't be opening until 930am tomorrow morning. Just a reminder to make sure you have plenty of feed and that your horses' water buckets are easy to get to and not frozen. And don't forget to keep the driveways to barns plowed and accessible. Stay safe and warm.
Please join us at our Equine Reproduction Symposium!
Tiny, whose warmblood body defies his name, has tightness in his neck. Most horses that exhibit abnormal cervical manipulation resist lateral flexion and the rider often describes resistance to lateral bending, being ‘heavy on one rein’ or resistance to achieving the frame desired. They also tend to have a change in behavior and present as crabby. The neck is comprised of seven cervical vertebrae ranging from the poll to the chest. Tiny’s lower vertebrae are the ones tha...t have been affected. Once it is determined that a cervical facet arthrosis is present, treatment may include ultrasound-guided facet injections. The area is cleaned with alcohol and a local anesthetic is given and then Dr. Allie Catalino administers a corticosteroid. You can see in the video the needle injecting the serum into the joint. The medication will alleviate pain and decrease inflammation leading to a more supple horse. See more
Yesterday was National Horse Day! In 2004, Congress designated December 13th as National Day of the Horse, and has been celebrated each year since. The day was established to encourage U.S. citizens to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States.

ECO is so proud to partner with such an awesome organization, and we welcomed the chance to be one of the sponsors for last weekend’s exhibition. The human - horse bond is so special and we love ATRC’s commitment to their riders and their horses.
Today we are thankful for things both big and small. We are thankful to be here, in this business, in this area, in this life. We are thankful that we are healthy, but we acknowledge what we and others have sacrificed to try to stay healthy. We are thankful to have wonderful clients who share our mission of compassionate care and communication. We are thankful to have these strong and sweet (mostly) and awe inspiring animals as our patients. We are thankful to have each other, the ECO family is truly special. And we are thankful for our own families near and far. Today we ask that you thank your horses, your horse friends, and your family that supports your horse love. Be safe, don’t feed your dogs table scraps, and enjoy the day.
We are happy to welcome some new members to our OakenCroft family. Alana Aho, a veterinary assistant and her husband Jake welcomed Chloe Addison. Abby Walsh, who works in the office, and Mark welcomed Matthew Joseph. Congratulations new parents!
It’s National Dress Up Your Pet Day! This is Dazzle, a mini mare that acutely dislocated her hip, a rare issue, and had to be taken to surgery for what is also a rare surgical therapy. She was not putting weight on her leg when she presented at the emergency call, and radiographs confirmed the dislocation. An immediate phone consultation with Dr. Nutt at Rhinebeck Equine led to a femoral head ostectomy, a surgery in which the top part of the femur is cut and removed to el...iminate the hip joint, therefore eliminating the source of the pain. The anatomy of the hip joint in a horse does not allow for a dislocation in this area to be ‘popped’ back in to place. Post surgery a pseudojoint made of soft tissue is formed with the scar tissue enabling the joint to move and removing the pain of the dislocated femoral head rubbing abnormally in the pelvis. So despite awkward gait, pony can be comfortable and can continue living a long life. #ponies #DressUpYourPetDay #vetlife
