Oyster Bay Railroad Museum 07.07.2021

Our opening day went extremely well! I am so proud of our volunteers who, despite the time available to accomplish our goals, were able to invite our waiting’s guests in before noon. We beat our own deadline. From cleaning up the property outside, to arranging and installing the artifacts, to working on our model railroad, to welcoming our newest volunteers at our display yard, I am proud to point out that through our doors and gates, walk the finest volunteers, anywhere!

WE'RE OPEN to the public beginning this Saturday, May 15th, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4pm. We're excited to show off the historic Oyster Bay Station as our new museum and welcome center. We hope you'll help us spread the word as YOUR museum takes this giant leap forward! That said, there will be a regular work session this Saturday, beginning at 8:30am, meeting at the station. We have a few last minute items to tend to in the station to ready it for our visitors ...before we head over to the yard. In the yard, we need to move a few things, set up some barricades and essentially make things safe for our visitors. With this done, we'll turn our efforts toward continuing work on Locomotive #35's parts. As always, many hands make light work. Remember to dress appropriately (no shorts, tank tops or sneakers) and be prepared with hats and sun block as needed. With visitors in the yard, masks will be required by our volunteers, along with social distancing as appropriate. As always, we'll have masks and hand sanitizer as desired. Hot coffee, tea and cocoa are always available to our volunteers, along with cold water and free lunch. We hope to see you Saturday, whether as a visitor with your family, or as a volunteer ready to get dirty! Contact this day will be Steve at 516 297 6232.

The Oyster Bay Railroad Museum is excited to remind everyone that we'll be opening to the public this Saturday, May 15th! BUT...Before we can do that, we still have a lot of work to do, both in the station and in the yard. If you're available, we're asking for your help! We're holding a special work session this WEDNESDAY, May 12th, beginning at 9am. We'll meet at the historic station and tackle things from there.... In the station we have displays to be arranged, an "O" gauge railroad to set up, lumber to be moved and a LOT of cleaning to do. In the yard there's cleaning of the equipment displays, work areas to be made safe and groundskeeping to be done. As always, your assistance will be greatly appreciated as we prepare for what's certain to be our most exciting season yet! Any questions may be referred to Gary at 516 455 6984.

I can’t thank our volunteers enough. Trains are beautiful in the snow, especially steam trains. But they're not much fun to work around when things are slippery. Out of an abundance of caution for our volunteers, we're cancelling tomorrow's work session. (Saturday, February 6th) Even though it's supposed to be a beautiful day, the sun and warmer temperatures mean that even if the snow melts, we'll be ankle deep in the mud...either of which are just too dangerous for us to be moving heavy objects around.... We thank you for your continued support and look forward to continuing our progress next weekend! Special thanks to our Vice President Rob Brusca for the photos!

14 degrees when we started and 27 degrees when we finished, and let's not talk about "wind chill"! Still it was a bright sunny day and in spite of the cold, 8 dedicated volunteers showed up, including a new young man who likes to weld! As usual, photo captions tell the story.

While this may be a bit dated, it's none the less appropriate here. Ray Kenny was not only a good friend (and in some cases, boss) to many of us here at the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, but he was a friend to railroad preservation. Perhaps this stems from his early days in Eisenhower (then Salisbury) Park working as a volunteer on our very own Steam Locomotive #35. Ray is sorely missed by all who knew him and this article is a nice tribute to the man. https://www.nj.com//nj-transit-railroad-boss-praised-by-wo

Baby, it's cold outside! Forecast for Saturday is for temps in the mid 20's with wind chill in the teens. That said..... There will be a regular work session for the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum this Saturday, January 30th beginning at 9am at our Oyster Bay yard. Efforts this day will be the continued restoration work on Locomotive #35. Specifically, parts restoration and likely some work on the firebox and boiler. Other projects will be tackled manpower dependent. ... Be sure to dress warm, layer up and don't forget your gloves. As always, we have free coffee, cocoa and tea for those desiring. Masks are available for those desiring, though we're pretty sure faces will be covered regardless. Contact this day will be Steve at 516-297-6232. We hope to see you there!
